Hi All,

Just completed my first pc build in many years.

I have removed all drive trays and am running with a SSD fixed to the back of the motherboard plate in a FD Define R4.

I was pleased with myself for remembering to screw the SSD on before installing the MB. Got everything installed, all connectors and power cables hooked up and the very last power cable was the one to the SSD. The SATA data cable fits (just) but the power connector from my Corsair PSU is too big, even the end one on the ribbon which does not have the doubled cable interference. The drive is flush with the case, and I can't imagine any connector really fitting there.

Is there such a thing as a low profile connector, or am I looking at stripping the whole lot out and remounting?

I would have thought anyone trying to flush mount an SSD would have the same problem, I'm amazed they don't flag it, its one of the selling points of the R4....

Very annoying!

I don't think they sell any?

they are all usually L shaped

can't you plug it in so the part jutting out is inside the case?

Hi Wazza,

Not quite sure what you mean. The drive is completely flush to the back side of the MB plate. There is no clearance between the connectors and the plate, so anything other than a very slim plug (like a straight SATA data cable) won't go in.

I have a horrible feeling I'm going to have to whip the MB out again....

Aaaaaghhh.....

That first one does look pretty slim, could be worth a whirl.

Really appreciate your help! Thanks for taking the time.

What wazza links to is what you need, had same issue on my case.

Right Angled connectors from PSU cannot fit as its flush to mounting bracket.

Top one is better quality and splits 1 SATA power from PSU to 2 as my case can hold 2 SSD's on rear.

@jh30 thanks a lot! was thinking about relocating to the optical drive cage, but now I've ordered the splitter, will save a lot of work.

In retrospect in the longer term its perhaps not such a great idea to mount behind the plate, real hassle to add a drive or change them out.

I've now seen someone on another site saying they stuck theirs on the rear plate with velcro pads, actually a pretty good idea I think!

How often do you swap drives out?

I can lift my case onto its side (on top of desk) with all cables connected and 2 thumb screws and side is off

You are saying those SSD's screw on from behind the Mobo on your case?

If so that is a mad design.

Yes indeed.

The screws are put in from the motherboard side (see link I found on google images) and enter the threaded holes in the SSD case. There is space for 2 drives. I thought it was a pretty neat idea at first, and probably still is if use velcro rather than the screws!

Surely those back plates come off, so you don't need to remove the mobo?

Or are you not using the back plates for some reason?

I think you may be referring to the large photo posted by jh30uk. I think those little trays come off, a much better design, wonder what case that is.

The Define R4 I am using does not have those, see the hyperlink to a photo.

Case is in Sig, reason I did not mention it : NZXT Phantom 630.

SSD's screw onto removable sleds and they slide down into 4 lugs and held by 1 thumbscrew.

That's a really weird (bad) design, are you sure it doesn't have any accessory to buy for a SSD sled at the back? Every time you want to take the SSD out you have to bleeding take the mb out?
