After hearing high praise from tefal in another thread, i went out and got it and i currently dl the following recommended mods from the site no mutants allowed:
High res patch
children patch
restoration mod
killaps unofficial patch

Cant wait to get stuck into a an old rpg game.

Leave the restoration project for now.

It adds some new stuff that is good for a 3rd/4th/10 millionth play through but isn't that good for a first timer (less well written/not all in the same style, good for a mod but not as good as the game stuff)

Just use the unofficial patch children and high ress first few times.

Remember inteligence governs what you can say not char (so if you're 4 inteligence don't expect to be able to talk about nuclear physics)

Also definatly read the manual (it will probbaly be electronic on the cd now as a pdf)

helpfull and funny as hell :D

How about killaps unofficial patch, it says it fixes over 800 bugs.

yep use the unoffical patch the fixes are excellent.

Just not the restoratio nmod (i found the writing to be quite poor my self and so it stands out a mile from the excelent writing of the original stuff)

Use:

High res patch
children patch
killaps unofficial patch

Once you've done fallout 2 definatly go back and play FO1 it's good but is smaller and less well polished (which is why it's best to play second). No shoe can mean you get stuck behind your teammates some times until lyou can slowly wiggle free and other niggles

but it is still the second best game in history after FO2 :p

Interested to know that too. Completed number 3 along with all the add-ons recently, and absolutely loved it. But then I'm an Elder Scrolls fan and have never played any of the previous Fallout titles.

im thinking of picking up fallout 1+2 plus tactics for £3.61. is this worth it?

i have the third and im currently engrossed in it! amazing game.

is there any definitive ways i should play these these games? patches etc? or is 1 better than 2? etc..? thanks!

Try reading the thread ;) already been answered in the posts above yours.

For £3.61 I don't think you can go wrong, just don't mind the hex-style graphics\movement. :p

meh got it and installed
children patch
unoficial patch
hires patch

game runs like ass! i cant even move the cursor in a smooth manner

[EDIT]
never mind i uninstalled the hires patch and reinstalled it and all is well!

The latest Restoration Project, 2.0, is quite buggy, so I'm waiting for 2.1 which is supposed to arrive in the next few weeks. Agreed that you should play vanilla first time around, just with patches.

Sadly, only discovered the original Fallouts after FO3 came out. Bought the trilogy pack and have played 1 & 2 six times each so far...love 'em! :D Don't think anywhere near as highly of FO3 now.

Btw, skeptically looking forward to New Vegas, though it should at least be better than Bethesda's attempt.

!

Don't bother with tactics/brotherhood of steel they're dire :p

For fallout 2 use

High res patch
children patch
killaps unofficial patch

Don't know about 1, FO2 is better imo.

Well decided to actually play it today instead of just installing it all thoes months ago...

Anyway just made my character hes got quite a high intelligence aswell as being rather handy in close combat.
I will try and finish this game while playing fallout vegas inbetween when its out next week.

Whilst the story isn't great in Tactics and isn't considered canon, the game itself is very good. Definitely up there with Jagged Alliance 2 and UFO:EU in terms of combat.

So Day 1 of Fallout 2.

I miss one thousand times because I'm the woman who can't hit a giant ant. But can talk her way out of the electric chair.

Whilst this may seem not too bad it's really frustrating because at the start of FO2 all you get is a spear and your bear hands to run fighting giant ants and scorpions. Maybe I should just go with an all out combat character, I don't want too though: reason being I want to see what the amazing story telling can be like!

Man that is the most frustrating starting area to a game ever.

Are you starting with FO2? If so I'd say that's a mistake. FO1 is a great game with excellent dialogue and story. It also sets the scene for the second to the point where you may get confused if you haven't played it.

You know you can just run, right? You do not have to kill something you cannot kill.

Though I always managed to kill every creature in the starting temple when I was playing, even with noncombat chars.

And yeah, I would recommend playing FO1 first, then FO2, and then FO New Vegas.
