Fallout 3 - a bit meh?

Well, I have been looking forward to this, and finally got round to giving it a try last night and today, but I am finding it completely uninterting and dull right now, and I am 4.5 hours in.

While I have not played a great many RPG games, I have enjoyed those that I did play - Mass Effect, Oblivion, Neverwinter Nights.

The setting for this is right up my alley, as I love most any post-apocalyptic story, but so far, something just isn't working.

I have been around Megaton, and found the characters dull - Moira in Craterside supplies made me want to go detonate the bomb just to get rid of her.

So, if I am not enjoying this after 4.5 hours, is there a point in carrying on? Shall I give it a couple more hours or just sell it on?

If it doesn't hook you even after 4.5 hours why are you even bothering to carry on? Normally I decide within about half an hour. The game's obviously not for you.

I'm not finding it that great either...

I absolutely loved oblivion, probably played it 4 different times and played those saves for 40 hours each. This I find too hard and find it dull aswell.

I think i'll stick with it though as it usually takes RPG's, for me, to get interesting around the 6 hour mark.

I kept waiting for the "great" bits to come.

You know, like in doom when you got the BFG or chainsaw, in Tombraider when you first saw the T-rex, or climbing up the folly, in X-com when you start reverse engineering the alien weaponry etc etc.
In this, it never comes, rather like Half life 2, you wait and wait for the good bits to start, and as soon as they do, the game is over.

well i kinda agree that if your waiting "for the good bits" to come then you'll be waiting a long time.

I liked the general trekking about, the atmosphere, environment, making weapons, killing lots of stuff quests etc. It does get a bit samey but still pretty good game high 8/10 fae me

I didn't like it much either, it's oblivion with guns which is great for most (as oblivion is incredibly popular) however i wasn't a fan until they modded it.

I'm struggling to get into it too. I know all RPGs take a while to get into but I can't even see the glimmer of it becoming amazing for me yet. Then again I wasn't a big fan of Oblivion, always preferred the JRPG way of doing things.
I'll stick with it for a few more hours in case it improves for me :)

I tried it for 3 hours then gave up, just not my cup of tea. Yet another highly rated game I just didnt rate. been a few of them this year.

Well, I ahve gotten up to 7 hours, and while i've gotten a bit more into it, I would say I am not really having fun with it... oh well.

Guess I will stick it up for auction while I can get a good price for it, and maybe try it again some time when I have nothing else to play and it's available for under a tenner.

Have to say its game of the year for me. I was hooked straight after I got out of the vault and looked over the wasteland.

Must just not be for you.

These games are never to my taste. I remember buying 'The Elder Scrolls' and taking back to the shop in ten minutes. I'd rather not 'waste' my time waiting to have fun and enjoy real life as well.

Just got out the vault and explored a little outside. Looks fantastic for the scale of the game. Certainly not played enough to know if it's "meh" yet but time will tell.

One downer, i'm getting motion sickness playing it. Not even Mirrors Edge caused that! :o

i get motion sickness in any fps, so i switched the camera on this to over the shoulder view and i dont have any probs :D

I had something similar, got out of the vault and thought "wow" the first time I looked across the landscape, but from then on played about an hour and just got bored! Didn't really like the VATS system, the menu design seemed pretty clunky and it just didn't click for me. I personally I found STALKER a far better post-apocalyptic game, it really gripped me. I just couldn't identify with anything in Fallout.

Everyone has their own tastes I suppose. I love it. Fallout purists will have plenty to complain about, but as a game standing on it's own merits, it's fantastic. Oh and I never got on with Oblivion personally.

I think that's one of the biggest problems i have with the game. Fallout 1 + 2 are two of my all time favorite games, this is not a fallout game, it just uses the label. That fact left me slightly bitter from the get go; it was effectively the final nail in the coffin for the chance of me ever seeing a 'real' sequel.

I don't really like this game, it just feels very over-hyped and bland. I've never played the first 2 games, but I liked the setting and a mate of mine was raving on about it so I thought I'd grab a copy. It just feels so shallow, combat is mostly shooting and moving backwards to avoid getting smacked in the leg or running forwards swinging a lead pipe around. Aiming is based on luck and wether you can open things or not based on an arbitrary number. I just found the whole thing very boring and underwhelming.
