Iv started fallout 3 from the start again, want a good charactor this time.
Im at the point where im with the dr li and dad going to project purity. I was wondering what would happen if i get the geck before dad dies ?

Should i go and try it ? If youv already tried please say, dont wanna use up my time going to the vault 102( i think ) to get the geck.

thanks

You don't get the GECK (no more details as it's a spoiler), in the the sense of finding it. I assume the game is rigged to prevent the thing being fetched if you go in early. And it's Vault 87.

I thought you could get the GECK yourself as the other way can be avoided if you want to.

Either way I think though that you wont be able to get access to the vault as you need to have the quest active and reached a certain point in the story for the way in to open up.

Unless you use cheats, you can't even get into the vault at that point of the game, the surface is way too irradiated, unless you cheat using console commands, and the underground tunnels at little lamplight are unable to be used without talking to the mayor of the town first. As you have not progressed far enough yet he will not let you use the tunnels, the dialogue tree will not exist. You can use console commands to remove the clipping but I'm quite sure that you can't pick the G.E.C.K up even if you manage to get into the vault using cheats.

Being a good character is awesome by the way. You get the best followers in Fawkes and Star Paladin Cross, and you can go up to Paradise Falls and slaughter all of the slavers for positive Karma.

i agree :) im basicly god at the moment and im quite enjoying it, im getting handed over random 10mm ammo which is useless buts its good against molerats etc :)

So now i can take it that its impossible to get the geck early? just a thought because i wanted the game to end a different way...

Btw you can get through the irradiated zone! get advanced radiation suit, and a lot of rad x assigned to a key. Iv got 45 medicine and i think thats put my radx up abit. i got to the door then realised it was broken D: (spoiler)

You need to make friends (or enemies) with Sydney...

Yeah definitely. The easiest way to get her to hand over that little beast of a gun is to find the holotape her father leaves in 'Our Lady of Hope Hospital'. I can't quite remember whether it's in the hospital it's self, or whether it's in the adjoining hotel, but either way, if you get that for her I think she hands over her weapon. If not you could always put a cap in her ass. Although after the "You gotta shoot 'em in the head" quest, I always found myself using the Ol' Painless rifle that Dave gifts you after the election up in the Republic of Dave. I love it, and I also like that it can be repaired with bog standard hunting rifles that the super mutants often drop.

right then, ive got loads of radx, im going to go to vault 87, it annoys me being the only undiscovered thing on my map!

Incidently have you tried activating the geck in situ?

Hah, lucky you! I'm just re-downloading it through steam now. Should be done by the morning and as soon as I get home from uni it'll be the first thing I sit down infront of.

Can't wait to start the whole thing again, the only bad side is that I don't have Broken Steel on my PC. Is there a way to carry on playing after the main quest has finished? As in, a patch, or anything like that?

nah you need broken steel, you can redownload thorugh the windows live thing.

Well, I'm re-downloading Fallout through Steam at the moment, I've not set GFWL up yet, which I may or may not do tomorrow, depending on whether I can be bothered with the alleged hassle. I think that's a little daft that you need to pay to be able to enjoy the game any further than the main quest.

I purchased Broken Steel for the 360 but I was hoping there was some kind of 3rd party mod that allows you to carry on after finishing the main quest on PC. I'll have to ask my mate Google.

Im sure theres a few mods out there that'll allow you to continue after the main quest (can remember them popping up last year shortly after release), but ive never tried any of them.

I found Cross wasn't great (got killed) but Fawkes seems to be pretty much invincible (I've played maybe at least 20 hrs at level ~25-30 with him not dying once) and has a great weapon too. Seems good as a mule for carrying loot too.

Cross is better than some of the other human followers I find, she's not as good as Charon the ghoul though I don't think, and you do have to babysit her a little. Dogmeat is good for finding you items that you know are in containers that are hard or very hard to lockpick. Finally though my favorite follower is Sergeant RL-13 the robot that you can buy from Tinker Joe outside the RobCo factory. He's immense, he levels up with the player and he's got a Plasma arm and a flamethrower, as well as saying some hilarious stuff in, and in-between battles. :)

I don't know if it was some bug with my game but for some reason Fawkes in mine turned invincible at one point, fired everything I had at him, mini nukes and all and it didn't even knock one bar off his health meter. Ended up leaving him at my house after that, thought it was cheating a bit to have an invincible companion with an infinite firing gatling laser...pity i missed his pack mule qualities.

at level 30 that happens.

I rarely use followers even though they're very helpful. I prefer to just go it alone, especially when trying to play as a Ninja type. My followers were always giving me away, especially Fawkes, and I do agree that him being almost invincible just spoils the game.

If you get the gek early the quest proceeds from that point e.g.

If you get the geck before dad dies you still get captured by the enclave do all the break out shizzle and when you get back to the citidel the game acts as though dads dead and you're on the final mission

pointless getting the geck then? i guess i gotta run back to the memorial place and tell them all that the coast is clear to enter the project purity :P ( i left them all outside so i can go get the geck )

Cross and Fawkes are the only followers I've been able to get to join me, I found a couple of others e.g. Jericho but my Karma was wrong. I didn't actually get any followers at all until after completing the main game!
