Fallout 3 Question (Possible Spoilers)

If you are going to play FO3 again and you don't get an overhaul mod you are crazy. I got bored of FO3 and then I restarted with FCOM mod and my god the game was so good, had a fair few other mods too.

What is this FCOM mod and where can I find it? I had a quick look on nexusmods but couldn't see it.

I think he's confusing it with something else. To my knowledge, FCOM is only an Oblivion compilation mod. FWE, FO-OK and Fellout are some of the major mods for FO3.

I quite like FWE since it lets you modify a fair number of things too. Such as how weight capacity, AP, HP and similar scale up, the global damage multiplier (its set to 2x by default), how weapons scale there damage/accuracy with points invested (so you can modify it to have its full damage potential straight off but your character will suck at shooting straight with low points. Plus you've got the alternative starts, new Stealth Boy system, Triage healing, etc.

Theres a mod that adds a bunch of stores and the like to the wasteland too. Think it was DC Interiors. Definitely worth picking up as the city ruins are a little tedious with every door unusable.

edit: wtf, that wasn't filtered last time I wrote it. Ignore the '-' in FO-OK.

Where is the best place for the mods?

I've already got half way through the game and just recently realised that there were loads of mods for it :( Where is the best place to grab them? May as well add them :p

I always got most of mine from the bethesda forums. All the mod devs post there and there are usually lists of must have extra and you can read up about all of them.

Sadly the forums aren't what they used to be now. They used to just be packed full mods and now seem to have more posts about people asking about them instead. I guess most of the devs have moved to skyrim now but I heard all the devs of the overhauls have stopped now because they have been doing them since morrowind:

FCOM is a mix of 4 overhaul mods to bring you the best of all of them and within these 4 mods is many other mods as well. It's all customizerble and lets you select options like changing spawn rates etc. For example, M stands for marty's monster mutagen mod and that overhauls the creatures, changing their spawn rates, sizes, stats etc. It brings the world alive by populating it with many more creatures and not ones that look identical.

However, from the looks of it I may have used FWE instead with MMMM. It's not quite the same but I think FCOM went under early on due to the devs wanting a break and I forgot. I certainly remember the name FWE.

If you scroll down the page you will find recommended mods to go with FWE and I highly recommend it. It will changes the game a lot though, the game will be a lot harder. I remember walking into the washington district and there being about 100 mega mutants and having to run away and come back with a minigun ;). These mods challenge the player and make you NEED better weapons. A bit like oblivion was a very easy game until these overhaul mods came out:

It also increases damage that both you and your enemies take and the accuracy of guns. You can iron sight people once you get good enough. It really does improve the game 10 fold. I likely used all the recommended mods too, I can't remember now sadly.

It is a modular mod, which is to say you can pick what you do and don't want. It will give you a choice like x2/4/6/8/12/24 for monster respawns, things like that. I highly recommend upping them. The monsters in the wild should fight each other also.

Nothing beats Increased Increased Spawns and Ghoul Rampage from MMM when you're a Heavy Weapons user. It spawns an absolutely ludicrous number of ghouls so you can just gun them down with your minigun (automatic weapons in FWE don't suck and can rip through enemies quite quickly, unlike vanilla where they were useless compared to single shot weapons for headshots).

+1

If I could force people to play with FWE, I would.

Completely different with mods!

However the textures were playing up and I don't know why, also I died in like 1 shot (didn't have any hardcore mode on) and it just quit to my desktop!

Point lookout is the best one:) Fallout 3 is probably my favourite game after Half-Life 2. I'm currently about 7 hours into New Vegas

Cool - I'll let Fawkes do the dirty work then :p

I'm looking forward to Mothership Zeta probably the most :) But I'll be sure to check them all out eventually :)

Mothership Zeta is by far the worst part of the game, is very linear, poor graphics, and is also quite buggy (door that doesn't open when it should do, quest randomly completing). The only 'good' thing is that you can collect loads of ammo for the alien weapons.

Ah slightly disappointed to hear about Mothership Zeta being bad - It looked quite good :p Nevertheless, I'll give it a punt :p

Make sure you save before you start it though...

I had it on autosave and it bugged up and I lost a 130 hour save :mad:

 Thanks for the heads up! I'll definitely make a save game before I start any of the DLC... just incase. I would rage so hard if that happened

I have to agree, I stopped playing when I got to the mothership

Unfortunately, bethesda games are notorious for being hideously buggy. I found that turning my radio off fixed a lot of problems in the game for me.

Having said this, the textures screwing up seems a bit odd. Are you sure you installed it correctly and have the mods in the right load order? I'm unsure as to how experienced you are with modding bethesda games, they can be a pain once you get so many mods going.

As I said before, FWE will make the game a lot harder. But trust me, you're used to playing FO3 easy mode and once you get into the frame of mind of FWE you will feel so rewarded as you get better and better and you'll still be OP late game also.

If you use the Mod Manager and BOSS you shouldn't have too many problems. It should sort the load orders out for you, that just leaves the installation. I think the new Nexus Mod Manager works with FO3 and Oblivion also (not just Skyrim) and has BOSS built in so thats probably a good starting point.

Its possible you don't have FOSE installed or run the game through that? But then I don't know what mods you installed or whether they require it.

I never had much trouble with it. There were moments when it suddenly became seriously unstable though like crashing everytime I went to a certain area or crashing frequently within a certain area. I rarely had trouble with it crashing randomly otherwise. They were always either very numerous or almost never happened.

I did, trust me! :p

Hm I thought I did, ill try again later to see if it works when I rearrange them...

I'm a save whore on these sorts of games. Manually create a new save every 10 minutes or so and then periodically have to go (usually when I reach the actual limit) to the folder and delete the first 1/2 - 2/3s, hundreds of Mbs collectively :o

I also couldn't stomach Mothership Zeta for long, and don't plan on ever finishing it.
