Yep, picked up the GOTY edition today as I had a craving for either Fallout 3 or Oblivion...

Anyway, I never got into Fallout 3 before, guess it's because I rushed into it and didn't really stop for any fun.

So, are there any guilds to join? Like in Oblivion? As it seems I am just taking a bunch of random quests. At the moment, I am doing that womans research in megaton, on the final chapter, having a break as I am half way through lvl 5 and been playing solid since starting a new game lol.

My only advice is to not rush through the main quest, but go out into the world and explore. Do all the side quests and have some fun first!

When does the game really pick up equipment wise? I just feel like I am collecting non stop crap half broken weapons and still using my volt armour :(

It's a bit like that most of the way though, you have to make do with what you have and be sparing with ammo, but things are worst at the start for sure. If you do lots of side quests you'll pick up some cool stuff.

Just enjoy the game as it comes and be patient, it's not one to be rushed!

I hated the wasteland survival guide quest!

Anyway your weapons will get better the more points you put into the stats a really good one would be repair because you can repair all those shotguns n assualt rifles giving them a damage n value increase.

Cheers for that, will consider that, over the last 5 perks, I have gone for the 3 ranks of the 10% boost in xp each time I rank up and now have gone for the one where it gives me more skill points each level. Guessed they would be best for leveling up quickly as I am playing the game on Easy not normal lol.

I hate that quest. If I do a third play through I'd probably just skip it.

Playing through on Hard and I have plenty of weapons, although I'm playing through as an Evil character so it's mostly stuff I stole. I'm forever having to purchase ammo though.

get yourself to the supermarket (super duper mart) early on (after you find megaton) its east of that. theres loads of good meds/equipment/guns in there, the battles a little tough but its worth doing for the rewards.
also try and find the dog around megatron as hes good to have early on.

and do the wasteland survival guide quests - their stupidly important and will buff you up a lot!
in general do as much as you can around megatron as you also aquire a house aswell which is really helpful for resting.

once you hit rivet city the game really gets interesting...
oh and dl the carry 999 mod!! it really makes the game better.

you biggest threat early on is exploring to much , you run into too many mutants and your a dead guy.

the game is amazing though, literally one of the best i have ever played.... so well worth sticking at.

You're still using the Vault armour? Are you looting the bodies of the raiders etc that you kill? Someone will certainly be carrying something better for you to use.

Regarding the equipment, you don't really get better equipment as such, but it'll be in better condition when you pick it up. The Chinese Assault rifle is great when fully repaired, as is the Combat Shotgun. The only weapons I find to be better are the laser weapons you can pick up from the various DLC packs, like the Alien Blaster and the Metal Blaster.

How should I proceed?

I'm level 4 at the moment, I have saved Megaton, and I am in pursuit of the family, I know they are located somewhere NE of the town on the bridge.

Now I haven't done many sidequests (that I know of) should I level up before proceeding to find the family? Or should I go to Galaxy Radio first?

I don't seem to have many decent weapons, I have my trusty baseball bat, a couple of pistols and hunting rifle I got from a super mutant I clubbed to death my baseball bat?

Any advice?

What I would do right after leaving the vault is go to Megaton make sure you have enough explosive skill to disarm the bomb in the middle of town and that's a level up right away, and a bunch of caps too. Even if you pick the Little Leaguer perk and set up your specials right you'll need to use Mentats or another aid to up your explosive skill high enough. The other things I'd do right at the beginning of the game would be to speak to Moriarty who owns the saloon in Megaton.

Ask him about your dad and one of his dialogues will let you do a favour for him in exchange for information. The favour you have to do is find a junkie called Silver who lives a very short walk away from Megaton. You can kill her and steal all of her caps and meds, you'll lose Karma but she's very easy to kill and you can make the Karma back up later if you're that way inclined. Complete the Blood Ties quest from Lucy West, then do the Wasteland Survival Guide as well as both of these give you an opportunity to level up without too much trouble.

Also there are a few points of interest you might want to look up when you're in the early stages of the game. Firstly, right around the back of Megaton on the west side there's a hollowed out rock with a sniper rifle and some ammo that you can pick up right at the beginning of the game, there's a few mole rats around there when you're a low level and if you're higher it might also be guarded by some Radscorpions so be careful. Another thing you might want to check out is the crashed alien spaceship. A dead alien can be found hanging out of the cockpit of the ship grasping an alien blaster, this is one of the most powerful weapons in the game although ammo is very scarce and the gun does tend to degrade quite quickly. It's more of a special weapon and should be used very sparingly, that said when it's in perfect condition it can one shot kill almost any enemy in the game.

The last piece of help I can give you would be to check the Fallout Wiki, it's huge and it offers lots of little tips that you'll probably find really helpful. I'll start you off with links to the two things that I've just mentioned. :)

Find The Family and tie up any loose side quest ends before going onto the main quest. If you need a hint I'll tell you that they're located in the subway. Evan King gives you 3 locations and two of them are an unnecessary visit and will end up just wasting your ammo and stimpaks. The train station location that he gives you is the correct area to search, if you enter the metro and follow it around you will eventually come to The Family's hideout. They are not hostile toward you so long as you are peaceful with them, if you have high speech you can convince the boy to return to Arefu, if you fail the speech challenge he'll stay with The Family.

You can also propose a deal whereby Arefu provides The Family with blood packs and in return they give protection to the villagers in Arefu. The best way to go about that side quest is to have a very high speech skill, that offers the best return in terms of Karma points. Also, if you do get The Family to give Evan King and the other villagers protection, you can go back to Arefu any time and Evan will give you a random item as a gesture of his gratefulness.

As for weapons, the hunting rifle is one of the best weapons you can have. If you travel to almost the very North Eastern area of the map you'll come to a settlement called The Republic of Dave. You'll find a safe in one of the buildings here with a special hunting rifle called Ol' Painless. It does more damage and is more accurate than the standard rifles but it uses the same ammunition and can be repaired by using other hunting rifles so I would collect as many as you can. Also this is the only place you can find Ol' Painless in the game and there is only 1 of it so if you do end up getting it make sure you look after it. With the right perks you can 1 or 2 shot a Super mutant with it.

Do the DLC - point lookout, the pitt, and operation anchorage if you want to delay the main quest and pick up some good equipment.

With Broken Steel the main quest is quite long, so dont be afraid to make a bit of a push with that and then go and do a load of side quests halfway through.

do as many quests in megatron as possible....
the family quest is a waste of time, i remember never completing that as its a search and seek type mission and pretty hard early on.

dont go to galaxy radio not unless you want your ass handed to you. (super mutant)

Yeah the last time I played the game I foolishly went to it and got smacked in the face by a super mutant! I had trouble even remembering what I had done and where the hell I was. :o

Even considering starting again.

Never played it since until this weekend when I started playing Fable II and want something different to FPS games.

I wouldn't say it was a waste of time, it gives you Karma and XP which is not to be sniffed at. Also, it isn't hard in the slightest you only face two Mirelurks and a couple of easily spotted traps. The hardest thing is actually the speech challenges which can be negotiated successfully even with low speech skills by simply saving before the speech, attempting and if you fail just reload and retry until it passes the challenge. It's worth noting you can also get 100 caps out of Lucy West if you go and tell her that her brother is missing before you seek The Family out. The speech challenges can also be skipped by just reading the entries in the terminal as soon as you enter the hideout. Also, even though you are given three possible locations The Family are always at the Meresti Metro Station which you can get to by going through Northwest Seneca Station which Evan marks on your map.

I think I have made a boo boo :(

I carried on to do the galaxy radio quest (satellite dish) to get info on my dad, I completed it (fat man gun is FUNNNNNNNNN!!!! AOE damage with it when running in circles rounding up 5 super mutants at a time is beyond fun). Anyway, I won't go to rivet city as I feel I have done nothing so far in terms of megaton, unfortunately I revealed that dude in the suit's plans to the sheriff and he then shot the sheriff :( So, how do I go about getting the quest to save megaton? Should I just start talking to random people, also, dog?

I am still on the last chapter of the research quests, cba walking all that distance just yet.

Right, I am level 4 at the moment, just doing the wasteland survival guide quests, now at the super duper mart I swear i leveled up, and unlocked a new perk, but it doesn't appear that I have any level 4 perks unlocked. My last perk is 'swift learner' from level 2. And from reading the fallout wiki I should have a level 4 perk.

Someone explain what has happened? Do they unlock after you pass level 4 or when you ge to level 4?

My advice is this....

Firstly, go back to Megaton and find Moira Brown. Speak to her and accept her quest for the Wasteland Survival Guide. Out of the options she gives you, choose the one that involves going to Minefield for the mines. The reason for this is three-fold....

1) On your way to Minefield, you'll encounter the Springvale School. This is full of Raiders which is obviously good for stocking up on weapons, ammo and armour (assuming you can take them all out without dying, obviously)

2) Minefield is full of landmines (dur!) which not only give you 10XP per mine for disarming them, but can be sold for profit or used offensively when being chased by critters like Radscorpions

3) There are several houses in Minefield which you can enter with plenty of useful items for later in the game when you start to create your own weaponry.

After completing that sub-quest, pick the sub-quest for finding food and medicine in the Wasteland. This takes you to the Super-Duper Mart, another great place full of items, Raiders and weaponry. Make sure you travel here only carrying the essentials as you will certainly pick up loads of weaponry and armour here which you can take back to Moira to either sell, or trade for better equipment.

From this point you should have levelled up a few times, have a nice stash of weaponry and armour in your house, and be more than ready to take on the other side quests. I'd personally stay away from finding Galaxy News Radio until you're level 10 or so, as the quest takes you into the DC Ruins, which contain plenty of Super Mutants who will inflict major pain on you if you're not ready for them.

Edit: Didn't see you'd already done some of that, d'oh!

When you get to level 4, although there are perks that you cannot assign to yourself until you meet certain other conditions. For example the perk "Mister Sandman" is unlocked at level 10 which means from level 10 onwards you may choose this perk, however it requires a sneak of 60 as a prerequisite, meaning you need to have your sneak at 60 and be level 10 before you can choose this perk. Hope that simplifies it a bit more for you. Also in addition there are certain perks which are multi-tiered.

My advice is this....

+1 for the Minefield suggestion, it's one of the most useful locations in the game as it contains a lot of leaf blowers, toy cars and lawnmower blades. One more thing you need to be wary of in the Minefield though is that there are a few mines that are unable to be disarmed, you won't get the disarm option when you approach them, if you get close to a mine and aren't getting the prompt for disarming it then backpedal quickly.

Also, Arkansas, the sniper in Minefield can be enslaved if you get the Mesmetron from Paradise Falls and take the Strictly Business side quest. You can later kill everyone in Paradise Falls but leave the slaves alive, they'll return to their original positions in the game world, Arkansas will return to his sniper position but will not be hostile toward you.
