Fallout 4 or Fallout 76

If you like crashes, weird fps and shonkers shooting mechanics, 3 and NV are your jam.

If you like a stable game with severely cut back RPG elements and good shooting/survival mechanics, 4 is your jam.

If you like taking it from behind without lube while being expected to be greatful for it, 76 is your jam.

another vote for Fallout 4 and its add ons

couple that with some amazing mods like sim settlements to get rid of the main irritation for many. plenty of quest and world addons and just general life improvements

along with some armour and weapon mods that far surpass the original games efforts

theres no competition really

Fallout 4.

For those saying Fallout 3, go back now and play it having played Fallout 4. I did recently, and wish I never had.

New Vegas was great, but Fallout 4, particularly if you add in modding (and how easy it is to mod) is one of the best games I ever played.

Controversial... But I didn't get on one bit with the Far Harbour expansion, I actually preferred Nuka World.....

Which game is the best if the two ?

76 arguably has better lighting than vanilla 4. And that's it. In every other way, 4 is superior to 76.

You can play 4 any time you like. You can play 76 when the servers are stable enough to let you play. Until you get disconnected or it just crashes.

You can have stable performance with 4. You will have epic lag spikes in 76, often measured in seconds.

You can mod 4 with hundreds of mods at a time from a choice of many thousands of mods, including huge amounts of extra content. There are a few minor mods you can use on 76, no extra content and the most useful mod is one that gives you better information about the weight of stuff in your inventory. Or maybe the one that makes your helmet torch less useless. And that's it.

Stuff will be in 4. Stuff might be in 76, or it might not. It depends on whether or not another player has picked it up recently. Is that location almost empty on purpose or does it usually have useful stuff, lore and suchlike but another player recently picked it up? No way of knowing.

You can build towns in 4, with or without many thousands of extra items from mods. You can build a small cabin in 76. You can build anything anywhere in 4, including inside other items. You can't do that in 76, but you can spend hours being forbidden to place something where it fits because you're not looking at from quite the right angle. Then you can't move or scrap it because that's buggy too. Screw you, sucker.

You can talk with characters in 4. Many of them. There is 1 in 76 (Grahm), with extremely limited interaction (all you can do is trade with him). And a few dozen robots that repeat the same few lines with deliberately annoying voices (although the sales patter of raider vendorbots is amusing the first couple of times).

If 76 was rebalanced for SP and made into a DLC for 4, it would be a very good DLC.

I'd tentatively recommend 76 as possibly entertaining for someone who has completely played out 3, NV and 4. There are some good bits in it. Not at full price, obviously, but at DLC level pricing. Maybe. I've getting some fun out of it, enough to be annoyed at often not being able to play it because the "always online" part only applies to the player, not to Bethesda. Despite the very low number of players, their servers don't cope.
