I fancy a game in this sort of style however im not sure which to invest the time in!

I have new vegas, stalker and some sort of stalker sequel?

I have tried both once or twice but found stalker a bit too hardcore, and didnt like the vats system of fallout

Can these games be improved with a single mod to make them more enjoyable without ruining the original vision?

You can play fallout3 without ever using VATS. I did the first time round, game was easier second time round when I did use it mind.

If you have time to invest, I'd say New Vegas. There's a "new vegas mods" thread somewhere around this forum which lists a few that do nothing but fix bugs and improve graphics. I'd get those in first, then play it. It's perfectly possible to never use VATS if you're used to FPS gaming - gives you more points to spend in other perks too, as you can ignore the AP ones and just go for GUNS!

All the stalker games are good, but you're right, they are more hardcore. Annoyingly, they start really hard then get much easier once you get some non-rubbish equipment.

Playing Fallout 3 without VATS would be akin to playing it as an FPS and...

Fallout 3 is, mechanically, not a good FPS.

I loved the game, and I tried but... nah. I wouldn't without VATS.

The STALKER series is amazing. It's dated, but looks better than FO3 IMO, especially when modded. It's not as open as FO3, but it's far from linear.

I have done a few run throughs of FO3, and always reverted to a combination of the two.

Early in the game VATS is more essential, it's a better shot than your own aim until you level up..... however later in the game I found myself relying more on my own aim and the crosshair.

Anyway.... FO3 gets my vote.... both great, but I have yet to complete stalker. I need to give it a run through modded to the max.

^ thanks for all the tips. i suppose i was kind of wondering if there was a mod that eliminates VATS altogether?

maybe ill try a bit of both again and see which clicks!

Its good fun trying to do a VATS only game. It does sometimes mean a lot of running around waiting for it to recharge but you start to really love the slow-mo headshots :p

Advisable to get a mod that improves how it functions though.

I'd say Stalker, if you've played fallout 3 already.

I got bored of New Vegas by half way through. I found stalker to be one of the most atmospheric games I've ever played. Completed it at least twice now, and am still tempted to play it again.

They are both awesome games. If I were you I would play Stalker first as its a shorter game. The first is the best of the series, at least get the unofficial patch mod as its quite buggy but not bad as the sequel.

V.A.T.S put me off playing the fallout games for years but it shouldn't have as its really good when mixed with normal fps aiming. I would probably play fallout 3 first though before playing NV.

I'm currently playing through Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl (103 hours in) with the Autumn Aurora 2.1 mod.

Rock solid stability, great visuals, tweaks enough of the gameplay to make it more difficult, but in a way more fair. Things such as minimal HUD for example. Ballistics are much improved and there is a greater range of weapons available.

Thoroughly recommended.

Cheers
