Family car needed 9k

I agree the Mondeo will be suitable. I own one but is a 59 plate. Has been very reliable and only thing needed was general wear and tear items and it never left me stranded.

With your budget I found one as below,
Ford Mondeo
I checked the MOT history on that car. Looks ok apart from a 4 month gap where it lapsed. Also, the price has dropped by £600 since the advert went live so maybe room for more negotiation. Only £20 to tax too. :)

If you consider a Toyota, avoid the diesel's.

I had a 2009 2.2L D4D manual estate with the 180bhp engine, it was fantastic until it went wrong, part costs were stupid for a family car.

£1500 for a set of injectors (rare for the 180bhp model) for example, £1500 for a fuel injector pump.

In the end the car e as scrapped off with under 90k on the clock due to be uneconomical to repair. Avoid and go for a petrol.

Skoda Octavia
I bought, and still own, a 2015 Octavia Estate, petrol, 1.4 DSG in 2018. Our son was 7 years old at the time so we'd already done the buggy and push chair stage.

The car has been brilliant as a family car. Is it the greatest car ever, no but it's been reliable and solid. It's relatively quiet, comfortable and economic. I think the trip says long term in getting 45mpg, but I've done long runs where I've got 50mpg, probably a bit more.

I've owned quicker cars but the Octavia is quick enough. Prior to the Octavia I shared my partner's Yaris, 1.4 petrol (I think) which was noisy and slow in comparison.

My only real criticism is that it's been a victim of the VAG "bong of doom" as I call it. It's a well known VAG fault related to the micro switch in the DSG. I recently tried to fix it using a piggy bag device but couldn't get it to work.

If you've got any specific questions about the Octavia I'd be happy to answer.
