Family holiday in Croatia - Any help/advice?

I would say the area of Istria is a great place to stay in a villa, if you can rent a car then you can head to Rovinj, Vrsar, Porec, Pula, Umag or you could drive over the border into Slovenia and go to Portoroz and Piran.

I would recommend renting a boat and head off to a little island, this is easier in the Hvar area though as the the locals have a wide range of boats for hire and lots of islands to visit, just watch out for the super-yachts arriving though.

Croatia has so much to offer, have a look at these

Just be careful in Croatian banks, always remember - no guns, no ice cream, no dogs. Note ice cream and dogs in red, guns only in blue.

OK, we're booked up to stay 7 days in a villa un Umag - We didn't have a lot to choose from TBH as we've left it a little late.

It's about 6-10km from the coast. We're tucked away so will need to drive to go any where but not too fussed about that.

On the last day (when we have to leave the villa) might look at going to Plitvice Lakes (3+hrs drive). If it makes sense (flight wise) we can always then fly out the next day so spend an extra night in a hotel that night where appropriate...

From what I can gather we'd be flying in/out of maybe Pula?

I'm lucky enough to have a fincee from Croatia, so have spent a lot of time in the country. Beautiful place, so much to see.

Plitvice Lakes are truly stunning, but get very busy during the season.

Driving in Croatia can be a bit odd at times. There are a lot of scooters, mopeds and motorbikes on the roads, keep that in mind while driving.

The no guns sign is because citizens can get an open carry firearm license, but obviously a lot of places don't want a random chappy coming in with a firearm bolted on his side.

Actually from a quick skim it looks hard to get a flight out on the Sat and a return flight back other than the following Sat... So the idea of staying over an extra night and flying back on the Sunday may simply not be practical/possible :(

When I went to Croatia we stayed in Split and visited Krka National Park - you can swim near the waterfall. Absolutely amazing place. A bit far for you looking at the map but I really rate it for anyone staying near Split and several people recommended Krka to us over Plitvice.

This discussion about holidaying in Croatia is making me think about going back in September. We have a week in Berlin booked next month, but hoping I can persuade the other half to think about going back to Hvar or Rovinj again.

Just got to work on her a bit, enjoy Umag Neil.

OK... Quick word of advice hopefully...

So we're booked into a villa in Umag for 7 days, and I've booked the return flight 2 days later.

The plan is when we leave the villa (Sat morning) to have a nice (3hr) drive down to Plitvice Lakes National Park area. First thing Sunday we'll then visit the park and in the afternoon do the 2hr drive back upto Zagreb for our flight Monday morning.

So my question is, on our long (3+hr) drive down from Umag to the Plitvice Lakes on the Saturday, is there anywhere obvious to stop off and visit to make a day of it? A nice village/town/beach? Something along this route? - https://www.google.co.uk/maps?biw=1...ved=0CCMQ-A8wAGoVChMIj7H_-cOWxgIVLCrbCh2e_AHl

ps: We would have done everything where locally by then I'd expect. eg: Pula.

Off in a couple of weeks to Tisno for Garden Festival. Going to take a day to check out Krka and stuff. Anything else an easy day trip to reccomend? Tisno is about halfway between Split and Zadar.

Just come back from 3 nights in Porec and 4 in Rovinj. Both really good - loads of amazing things to see / explore and the food and drink is great. Bit touristy but not crazy amounts - plenty of places to escape too.
