I'm toying with the idea of getting a fan controller... but in the back of my mind I keep thinking should I bother with an external one and just use a software based controller to mod my fans when I need to??

I'm running an Abit IP35 Pro with 3 120 case fans and a tuniq tower cooler.

and suggestions would be highly appreciated.

It all depends on whether or not you really need it, I prefer just having really silent fans, no need for a fan controller in my book.
However, if you are looking for one, I can recommend the Akasa Fan controller Pro, it does fan control and temperature sensor in one.

It would be useful to control the fans... when I'm rendering out an animation I needed as much cooling as possible but when I'm just typing out code I dont need them running

I think basically I'm asking is it easy to use an external fan controller or is software the way.

If I go for an external it'll be either the Zalman ZM-MFC1 or Sunbeam Rheobus

Software is prob the easiest then as it does all the speeds for you.
With the external however, u can usually get stuff that does more than fan control, like extra usb ports and the like, nice to have if thats ** thing.
