Hey guys, this is my pc:

Intel Core i7-4770K 3.50GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - OEM

Gigabyte Z87X-OC Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard

BitFenix Ronin Tower Case - Black

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-Bit - OEM

2 x TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLAD38G2400HC11CDC01)

Alpenföhn K2 Mount Doom CPU Cooler

SuperFlower Golden Green HX 650W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black

Gigabyte Radeon HD 7950

I recently had some of these bought for me:

Basically some normal case fans. I now have Six case fans. Overkill maybe, but my last pc suffered a lot from over heating so trying to play it safe! (Cant afford water cooling).

Anyway. Here is my problem.

Some times when I turn the pc on all of the fans work. They aren't PWN fans, it is just the three pins used and not four. On the other hand sometimes the fans will sorta nudge along but then fail to spin up. The LED's come on, but the fans don't. My understanding is that if they are just using the three pins they should just spin all the time no matter what.

Is that wrong?

And does anyone know of any good PWN fans at a decent price?

For the record the fans were bought for me with the best of intentions and they didn't know about PWN fans. If it was up to me I would have just gone straight for the 4 pin connectors.

I'll give it a go ASAP.

Would it be better to just try and get hold of some PWM fans? And any recommendantions for PWM fans?

Well try what I mentioned first and see if it cures it, sounds like the fans arent getting enough V to start up.

Corsair do nice PWM SP120 fans.

The only thing I can find ont he BIOS regarding the fans says that they are set to "normal". Is this what i should be setting to disabled?

Im probably getting confused with Giga's X79 BIOS which does have a disable function.

You should actually have Normal, Silent, Manual and Full Speed options.

Try the latter.

Also have you installed EasyTune software?

Honestly I wouldn't get EasyTune (App Centre) software, it slows down logging in massively as me and my brother have experienced

Are all the fans plugged into the motherboard? It sounds like you have more fans than the max power the motherboard can supply. Try putting a couple of them on a molex and see if the others become more reliable.

I did notice on my Asus motherboard that the fans were working fine initially, but became temperamental when I swapped some out for more powerful fans. I needed to re-run the Asus fan controller software so that it could profile the fans again and work out that more fans needed more power, and since then they have worked flawlessly.

Well, if that was the case is it because of the 650w power supply? Because the board does have 6 slots of fans, plus two CPU fans.

Take a look at your motherboard manual. Usually they list the max fan capacities for the headers. Then check to see what your fans are rated at.

The PSU you have is a quality unit and shouldn't have problems supplying the required power, so I think it's more likely to be that you're exceeding the limits on the fan headers, or you've got wonky settings in the BIOS. If your fans are twitching, like they are trying to start spinning but they don't have enough power, then they are not getting enough juice, and you need to figure out why that is.

Read your mobo mamual, the BitFenix Spectre LED ORANGE 120mm Fan are ok.

I have just had a quick look and you have probably got the wrong setting, read manual its not hard to set them up.
