Fan Noise

I cant remember the last non-budget mobo I used that didnt offer a form of fan control. You should be able to lower the voltage from 12 -> 8 for example. Are you sure there isnt a fan control section in the mobo bios?
 
My PC is very silent after I got my new PSU, all silent fans and an Antec P182.

The 120 CM fans are rarely the noisy part, I have 7 120 CM fans in total, plus the CPU, PSU + GFX fans = 11 fans altogether, and its all silent with brilliant temperatures.

I have my Antec trispeed fans set to medium, and my custom Zalman VF950 graphics card fans connected to a fan controller, each running at 2800 RPM.

I have just checked the BIOS and the CPU Fan header (where the front fan of the CPU cooler is connected) is SMART and Enabled, so I was right in thinking it's revs depended on CPU heat. Given that though, I would have thought the rear fan of the cooler would have to share the same SMART control :confused:.
As it is, the rear fan speed would appear to be fixed depending on what speed it is physically set at - either by voltage control or by software.
Just a terminology check now. Are System Fans and Case fans the same thing?
And another question about the 5870. Is that fan SMART controlled depending on heat?
Apologies if some of these questions appear a bit null but this is new ground for me :(
 
well your CPU fan(s) is most likey a 4 pin PWm connection, which allows you to control the fan speed, by adjusting the speed of the "pulses" sent to the fan on the 4th pin. you case fans are almost certainly going to be 3pin fans, which dont use pulses to vary speed. the only way of lowering their speed is to lower the voltage. if your mobo doesnt support this, then a fan controller should. failing that, just stick some description of resistor onto the red wire of the fan
 
Your case is only as quiet as its loudest component so even if you deck it out in 5V modded case fans the PSU, CPU, graphics card and any other possible extra fans like NB will still be heard. As mentioned by others you need to identify which one is making the racket but i really doubt its the noctua. If you are a bit hands on just try them one at a time and stick your head in the case to see which it is then change it out.

Looking at your spec my initial thoughts would be the graphics card or PSU (not sure if you mentioned which one you have) but you will need to check yourself.
 
Have a look in your motherboard's BIOS - with my Asus board I can set the CPU fan(s) to be on a 'silent' profile. I've got 3 and I can't hear them. As soon as the system is adequately stressed, they spin up just fast enough to keep things cool.

I'm my case I've got 3x140mm, 5x120mm fan, a PSU fan and a graphics card. It's quieter than a person breathing. :)
 
Thanks everyone, obviously a bit of a shakedown required. I have suitable kit to substitute temporarily to check. Just a bit miffed to have to do this on a new, pre-assembled rig but there you go. No disrespect to OC and I did buy for performance so I expected some noise ;)
I'll post if and when it's resolved to my satisfaction.

The high pitched whine is from the vRaptor primary HDD :( It's continuous, very high freq - like a mosquito...is this par for the course for this particular HDD?)
Any advice welcome ;)

Par for the course, I'm afraid: raptor's are loud. The whole point of them is performance, noise doesn't factor into it.

I'd suggest getting an F3 or WD Black, they're pretty cheap, massive capacity, quiet and nearly as fast as the raptors in everything apart from seek time.
 
I can't hear my F3 unless I have my head in the case. I've got nothing to compare it to, but I haven't felt as though it's holding the PC back at all.
 
OK, thanks for that. As long as it's not a sign it's on the way out, that would be a real PITA ;)

I assume the whining noise is caused by the actual drive and not through transferring vibrations into the case?

If it's the latter, you could bungee mod the drives to reduce the vibrations :)
 
:D Sorted. It was the audio alarm which was enabled in CMOS for the PWR Fan header. There is nothing connected to it! :cool:

woot glad you got it sorted, nothing than getting / making a new pc to find it sounds like a hoover.
