As not to trash the GT5 thread, I thought this little gem deserved it's own thread. A discussion on Froza 3 and GT5 resulted in the below comments:

that as may be, but can you be a fan of BOTH?

well technically, they are competing with each other, just indirectly. like a TV competes with a radio for attention. its all about mindshare.

like rationally, could you be a fan of Mario AND sonic at the same time? they were on competing formats, and one was cool and the other one was mega lame. it just depended on your viewpoint as to which was good and which was lame.

Interested to hear the thoughts of the community.

Do you not play certain games based on your 'allegiance' to one or the other?

its not about loyalty to one side. you either enjoyed the slower jump and shell people platformer, or you enjoyed spinning around like a pinball machines. they were both very different. to an extent that i dont see how you can really like one and also really like the other to the same extent.

like GT and forza.

I happen to love both Mario and Sonic games, am I a freak for this?

Dunno wtf NickG is on about, of course you can be fans of 'competing' games at the same time. I have no allegiance to a brand, I'll play what I think is good, I don't care who the main character is.

Don't care. Played Forza 3, loved it got GT5 on pre-order and I'll play this and if I get bored of it, mght go back to Forza 3.

Bit like saying I'm not playing COD - Black ops, as I'm a medal of Honour fan. Stupid.

I play all the great games I can, I couldn't give a monkeys what format it's on, nor whether it's considered a competitor to any other game I like. Doing otherwise is just stupid IMO.

The last statement by Nickg basically says if things are very different you cannot like them to the same extent. So you cannot like a steak as much as you like ice cream, they are too different!

It's a problem with the human race I'm afraid.

On one hand, you have normal, rational people, capable of making their own decisions on what they like and what they don't without needing to be told what they can and can not like.

On the other hand, you have morons. Now your stereotypical moron doesn't really have their own thought processes. They are programmed by society as a whole. They latch on to an idea and take it to an extreme.

I feel this explains fanboys. To go to such extreme lengths to explain how their given choice of game FAR outweighs anything 'competing' without even conceding that another person's personal choice might allow them to like both, or even prefer the competing game, is just simply moronic.

I think some games get mentioned far more because they are exclusive. Xbox owners will always recommend Gears Of War 2 and Fable 2 etc. A strange choice when we look at the other console games from the last few years. I'm not saying that they are bad, but there's much better out there. I can't help but think that part of the reason is because they are xbox only. On the PC, the amount of people that have jumped onto Starcraft 2 seems odd. Again, I can't help but think that there are many people who decide to like this game because it's the first major advertised PC only game for a while.

I enjoyed both mario and sonic when i was a child. I guess it takes a certain sort of mentality to enjoy 1 thing and not another just because they were created by developers to compete directly.

They are games, Stop taking it so serious. Its not a war!!

I have never been biased based on producer/platform, it is a pointless exercise and can potentially mean that you end up losing out by not playing a decent game.

Personally, I bought a PS2 specifically for GT4 and I bought an xbox specifically for FM3.

I have now bought a PS3 spefically for GT5 and it's currently sat gathering dust waiting for release date :D

Good man - keep options open. Oh F1 2010 is just around the corner. You're only problem is, which console to buy that one for... lol

Ahh fffuuu....

Thats a good question, in that case it's probably going to come down to price/graphics.

Hmm I have lived through the snes/megadrive battle, saturn/ps1/n64 battle, dreamcast/ps2 battle, ps2/xbox/gamecube battle, xbox 360/ps3 battle.

No matter how old you are, how much you earn, what you do for a living you will always have one console you love more. At high school I saw lads acutally fighting over which game/console was better.

No matter how old you are

People grow out of it.

/edit I guess its an individual thing, if you are a fanboy type person then you will be, I've seen the same as you, but I've seen most of my friends move away from it and we just end up getting whatever each other has, that is actually a pretty significant deciding factor in my experience.

^ agreed.

I mean there were consoles that had more games on I enjoyed! or consoles which i preferred the contoller on. But that had nothing to do with loyalty.
