Looking to dip my toes in the VR world, want a stand alone (for the missus) with PC connectivity (for me to play HL Alyx) is the Meta Quest 2 a good starting point ?
I would say no, but, it might mean that you have to uninstall games to free up space for new games. Depends on the games your better half plays, and if she likes to replay games after finishing them.
I sort of bounced off it. I loved the original X-Wing and Tie-Fighter games, but this while nailing the look and feel felt off to me and the actual gameplay didn't grab me.
It was also undermined by awful VR performance where it looked blurry and ran poorly no matter what settings you used.
When it first released the skybox of stars looked exactly like that in VR - a low-res pasted on background. They did fix that though.
Plus it was super awkward to setup for VR as you had to start in 2D mode then switch to VR.

Piece of advice would be to download First Steps onto the headset at first. A very nice introduction to the controllers, a few fun little things and a good introduction.
If you feel motion sick, stop playing, don't try and push through. Little and often will build your VR legs. Some things are "harder" than others. Smooth walking/turning is tougher than teleport, vehicles even tougher, and rollercoasters are the worst. It's quite common, after a few days, to feel strange like nothing is quite real or your still in a game. It passes after a week or so, and it's just your brain getting used to it, nothing terrible, just a little weird. Also depends on just how much time you spend in VR at first.
There are some games/softwares that are basically must buys, but before you must buy them, ask if there's referrals available. Virtual desktop (very good wireless PCVR software) and Walkabout mini golf, both have referrals available, so 25% off for you, and £4 credit for whoever refers them to you. Win win.
