What the hell is a ganger?

Anyway just do pimps and ho's so you can get the ladies to all dress up hot :p All the blokes have to do is slick back their hair and wear dark glasses + leather jacket all night.

Dress as animated characters from films and TV?
Historical figures (no, not Hitler) ?
 
A good way to keep it open, while still having a theme is to pick a letter as theme. For instance a 'C' party can have crayons, courtesans, colons (the punctuation) etc. People can make a word fit what they want to dress as keeping all happy.
 
Probably the funniest theme I've been to, though not appropriate for a school, was a bad taste themed one. Two people dressed as the twin towers, with little cut out planes on fishing wire that can be crashed into them was quite amusing, amongst other things.

those are terrible themes, we've tried them in the past, no good imo

For more of a laugh, combine it with cross-dressing and have women as pimps and men as ho's.
 
Hmm...clerics.

You'll get lots of bishops and popes, but the more adventurous could find something from one of the dozens of other religions.

There are all sorts of good themes though in all honesty; pretty much any ridiculous idea can make for a fun night out as long as people go with it rather than doing it half-heartedly.
 
pretty simple one is 20's gangsters and molls
went to one like that recently, most the girls wore flapper dresses with the men in suits. Meant everyone could dress up without too much effort... apart from the one person that came as a dead gangster complete with fake gunshot wounds and blood lol.
