Fantastic conroe overclocks

Can someone answer a very simple question thats been on my mind for sometime now. All i hear about the conroe is that it overclock so good. People have report 4.6ghz+ from 6600's and some fantastic overclocks even on air cooled setups. Why then if these CPU's overclock so well are the stock speeds from intel SO low. E6600 2.4?? if these chips overclock well past 2.4 and are completly stable you would have expected intel to have a conroe 4ghz extreem edition at least??

am i missing something here?

They have a low fsb at stock, so when you up the fsb you get a lot of speed out of it.

Also, would you buy 4GHz stock CPU? It would likely come with a £1000 price tag on it, and because the stock speed is so high, the fsb probably won't go any further so it would be a bad overclocker. Think about it for a second:

£250 for a 2.4GHz conroe that goes to 3.5GHz
or
£1000 for a 3.5GHz conroe that goes no more.

What numbnuts is gonna pay £1000 for a CPU that doesn't push anymore juice out?

The most you can reaslitically expect on air is about 3.5GHz.

The problem for Intel is, they decided to have a full product range from the value to the top end on Conroe and by the looks of things the 65nm process they're using is churning out chips that are all of a fairly equal quality and will possibly all overclock to over 3GHz.

When AMD released the A64 it was mid to top range so they didn't really have a cheap low end CPU (the Barton was in this slot) that was going to overclock to top end speeds.

Jokester

besides intel are not going to put out the top of the line fastest chips out now, they are looking at market competition and setting the speeds accordingly. They can sell more like this, every few months bumping the speeds up etc..

Yes you are missing something.

Intel will only do the "bare minimum" to beat AMD. It's not in its interests to release some super fast CPU when it can drag out Conroe's scalability for possibly 2 years. That's 2 years profits versus just 4 months.

More importantly though, a Conroe running at 4GHz will be drawing some serious juice and putting out immense heat. These characteristics are not in keeping with Intel's new "performance per watt" philosophy and certainly aren't suitable for desktop applications.

The mad thing about these chips is that they look set to obsolete phase-change cooling, or at least make it less effective than it used to be. :(

FSB/memory seems to be the limiting factor (on the motherboards, not the chips themselves) with these, not heat - which is quite shocking really.

yes, its all about the benjamins.

it was getting that way with the a64's.Their lower heatout affected extreme cooling as well. air cooling was doing 80% or so of what you could achieve with phaze cooling. I think conroes really will be the death of extreme cooling.

what ever the case.. i think i'll be buying one. All 'independent' review seem to suggest the conroe will kick arse on a whole new level. I fear this might be the longest month of the year.

The problem we have at the moment is fsb limitations. Once better boards start emerging phase will come into its own. ;)

neither can I, sigh.................... I reckon people that pre-order the EE version of conroe should get thiers early :D :p

I reckon they're earning too much money if they're happy to sink an extra £500 for a chip which will probably clock no better than a E6600. :p

I think you have all been duped, and Conroe will be slower than Athlon Xp ;)

Not really

I hope all you people who ordered the EE play a lot of games! ;)

Would be great to see conroe being released in 2 weeks, I just want some more motherboards now!

As previously said, it will be FSB limitations that will hold a lot of people back for the time being, but certainly looking forward to getting hold of one of these processors very soon and seeing what they are really capable of.

One thing that I am going to be quite wary of is how much voltage to put through these chips, for example with A64 chips, you know roughly what to put through on air before you hit the ceiling, but not so sure about these.

Certainly think some good memory won't do it any harm either, especially with tight timings :)

The E6600 looks by far the most promising chip, 4mb L2 cache, yummy :p

The X6800s are multiplier unlocked, so they can be pushed to their limit without the FSB restriction. It's a lot of extra money though, I'll be happy with a 6600 @ 3Ghz :)

Thats why I said it will hold a lot of people back :p :D
