I'm about to send off 15 CVs with covering letters. All been double checked by my English teachers etc, but I'm just wondering what I should put on the envelope, before the address.

I've done this before and simply put "FAO: Manager", from which I receved 3 job offers out of 10 :D :p.

I'm wondering though if it's perhaps a little too cheeky or informal, considering how formal my covering letters and CV are.

Suggestions?

Phil.

how about a quick 2 min phone call to the company and ask the receptionist the name of the manager of x deptmartment.

at least it looks like you made some effort ?

It's effort enough typing out 15 covering letters or even finding 15 places I wish to work :p. Folding paper and putting it in the envelopes, then finding and writing all the addresses. Pffttt!

They need to start paying me if I'm gonna do anymore; which is the idea! :D

I hope you're being sarcastic.

I would call them to find out the manager or HR managers name.

It shows you have given more effort than everyone else. If you think writing a letter is effort you need to step into the real world.

If i really wanted to find a job, i would definately phone the company and ask for the name and position of the relevent person, and then put that on the envelope and the covering letter. Puts you above the rest from stage 1.

As a past "manager" any c.v's addressed to my title went in the bin.

Those applicants that had taken a bit of time to ascertain my name were the ones I wanted my staff from.

I was being sarcastic, yes. :)

It's a good idea though, and one that didn't cross my mind until this thread. I have already written four out with "Personnel Manager" on them. For the rest, I'll phone up and get the relevant names! :D

HR get 100's of letters like that.

Why not spend a bit of time, highlight the companies you want to send your CV's to, and ring the companies asking them who the CEO or Chief exec is so that your CV goes to them personally?

It's quite likely that the if you just send it to HR that some junior HR bod will get the letter and you probably won't get much of a response, if any.

Keep your CV as brief and as detailed as possible - no more than 2 pages and make sure there's no spelling or grandma errors on your cover letter.

Don't forget contact details - home, mobile and email, as well as postal address.

edit: oops, as psifox said re naming people!

Heid bummers rarely open their own mail, it would go to the PA or secretary who will re-direct it to HR, you're better off going to the Head of Personnel.

all depdns on the size of company i guess.

better to start at the top and be filtered down, than start at the bottom and put in a draw marked (to be kept on file) which innevitably is the waste bin.

i'd also email it to the boss, the HR manager and to the corporate enquiries. emails cost nowt and you can put a read notification to see who's had what, and when.

if you're mobile then go to the companies, suited and booted and enquire about any up and coming vacancies. sometimes they may be just about to advertise, and they will be happy not to spend money going through agencies and the like if you have what they need.
