I'm thinking about getting a 360 with a kinect but I'm worried I haven't got enough space. I've read that about 6ft is the minimum between yourself and the sensor (not sure how accurate this is though).

The front of the TV unit is 240cm from the very front of the sofa. So if I put the kinect in the middle of the unit (at the base of the tv) I'd have about 260cm (8'6") absolute maximum. Now bearing in mind I wont be standing with my heel on the sofa the whole time and would need to throw body parts toward the tv, do you think this is enough space? There's no way I could move furniture to make space.

Does anyone play in a room of similar dimensions or perhaps even smaller? Have you had any problems?

Thanks.

Our front room has around 6' from where the sensor is to your heels touching the sofa, so I have around 5'6" to play, it is ok for 1 player.

However there is a new gadget coming out that allows you to play in smaller spaces, it's like a clip on magnifying glass, but works in the opposite way.

You should have plenty of room for 2 players with that space.

Any links to this?

I don't really want to rely on an add-on in order to use it properly. If the add-on worked perfectly then I'd imagine Microsoft would have released it already as that would open up a market for the customers in smaller houses.

But surely if it allows you to use the Kinect in a smaller area then it wouldn't matter if Microsoft released it themselves?

I don't care who releases it. It just seems odd that it hasn't been thought of sooner. Unless it had been thought of sooner, but no one could work out how to implement it until now, in which case that would be great and I'd snap one up!

Fairpoint i guess. Personally I see it as a third-party addon which improves the product. Much like the trigger extensions for a PS3 controller.

There has to be a draw back otherwise Microsoft would have included it by default, to suggest they didn't study a way to reduce the main drawback of Kinect (the space needed) is silly.

Just a bump on this topic, I got a Nyko Zoom yesterday and from my quick play last night on KS Season 2, it's very good.

Literally just clips onto the front of the Kinect, and the amount of extra room it picks up is significant. I can pretty much see the whole half of the room that it's pointing at now, whereas before it was just a corner with just enough space for me at about 6-7ft.

Far from lessening accuracy, things actually feel more accurate to me, navigating menus just seems snappier and more responsive. Plus there doesn't seem to be any fish-eye effect on the picture, certainly standing centrally the after-play footage of me was perfectly normal.

The only downside is that the Kinect takes slightly longer to initialise, think it's compensating in brightness for something being placed over the lense, but that's a minimal issue.

In short if you are struggling or even borderline on space, this is a worthwhile buy :)

Microsft hasn't addressed it because they do there design work based on US size living rooms which are generally much bigger than those in the UK so they don't really see it as an issue. Probably holding it back for the next version to boost sales as well.

From the few reviews I have read of the Nyko zoom say that in some games it works fine but anything that requires any kind of precision is way harder and some game just refuse to work with it

I was playing darts last night which is pretty precise, plus tennis and golf and they were fine. I'll try some different games tonight if I can.

Menus, calibration, dashboard stuff has all been fine though so far :)
