Far Cry 2

Its really annoying that three high-scoring, highly anticipated games have been released on the same day, then Fallout 3 next week, then Guitar Hero World Tour the week after, then COD World at War. Its silly, I want to buy them all but simply can't afford it.

I think I'll give Far Cry 2 a miss, sounds boring how you have to spend ages travelling to locations etc. Also, Dead Space is a game I really want to play but the story is only meant to be about 8-10 hours long, so think that might be a rental instead. Probably just going to buy Fable 2 today.

Been looking forward to this all year but I don't think the hardware in the 360 is going to be able to push the graphics out that you would get on Crysis on the PC or even FarCry on the PC

That's bang on.

I had a quick look at it through the initial jeep scene to where you wake up and was really dissapointed with the gfx - I though PC far cry 1 looked better.

Just did this review in the PC section (I have the pc version) but I'll copy it here as it should apply:

CONS

Respawning - The game needs it, but not done like this, can get very frustrating taking out a waypoint, going 500 yards down the road to the weapon store, coming back and it being completely restocked.

Safehouses - A minor one but it annoys me that all the safehouses look the same

All on my own - Every mission the faction leader says "oh btw this is a secret mission so even our own soldiers will attack you" Not sure if this will change later in the game but its a bit annoying that EVERYONE attacks you, would be nice to have some allies

Repetitive - The missions are fairly repetitive, using your buddies adds a little variation but generally its go somewhere, kill someone/steal something/blow something up

AI - Feel a bit cheap sometimes, like if you kill someone they seem to home onto you very quickly, other times they just stand around looking lost.

PROS

The world - Somehow the world still feels pretty well designed, the graphics may not be crysis level but they are very good and the terrain is very nice to drive/walk/boat around on

Vehicles - Vehicles are very good, controls are excellent

Weapons - Weapons are great, each one feels quite different so its a genuine pleasure when you buy a new weapon. I like how you can't just carry every weapon, choosing between a sniper rifle and assault rifle changes the gameplay quite radically.

Animations - The extra animations added to keep you in first person are excellent and really add to the immersion.

Fire and explosions - Brilliant, really add to the gameplay when you can create these huge fires consuming everything.

Final Thoughts

It tok a while to get into, for the first hour or so I was on the verge of exiting and uninstalling it several times, yet slowly I started to really get into it, now Im about 6 hours in and still enjoying it. This could be a very, very good game with a few tweaks to the cons I've mentioned, either in patches or through mods. Lets hope that Ubi relent and give us some mod tools. Obviously I can't comment on the story yet as I've only done about 5 main missions so that could affect my final score but at the moment:

7.5/10

My only advice would be if you are going to buy it and your PC can handle it buy it on PC, the world does seem very big and I agree that it is annoying taking out a waypoint then finding all the bad guys back there 5 mins later when you go past again, I'm about 2 hours in and starting to get to grips with it now seems like there is a lot of depth to it though so I'll be switching between this and Fable 2 for a while I think.

I would agree with this. It is a good game although it is let down in a few areas.

I must admit though I am pleasantly surpised at how well the PS3 handles it. The graphics are excellent (and not just excellent for a console excellent if I was playing this on my pc) and I have not noticed any framerate hiccups. It isquite amasing that they seem to have made a game that looks 85-90% as good as crysis yet runs a lot better. Hopefully the will liscence this engine to other developers.

The controls do seem to have a degree of dead zone although iddling with the sensitivity has pretty much solved that. The big bug bearer I have though is the fact that iron sights is a shoulder button and run is L3 (so clicking the left analogue stick) - I find this very difficult to do and would prefer it if run was a toggle (especially as you have to click the stick which you are also moving about).

Sorry to be fenickety, but i this whole 'nearly as good looking as crysis' thing really isn't true in my eyes. To prove my point i shall use an example taken from the PC gaming forum:

Far Cry 2:

Crysis:

Crysis blows it away frankly, but that isn't to say it looks bad and you are right it does run much better than crysis does, it just doesn't look in any way comparable.

anyone started to feel dizzy or sick from playing this yet ? ive read on ubi forums that quite a few people are as its been cropped so the view in widescreen isnt wide enough.

Yeah, they've cropped the FOV to 70% iirc, the result of this is a very subtle sort of bending effect in the image, as if you're looking at the world from inside a fish-bowl if you get what i mean. It really didn't help me one iota when i was trying to play it hungover yesterday. I find it hard to believe that a developer doesn't take widescreen seriously yet, considering the majority of consoles will be hooked up to a widescreen television.

Is anyone else massively let down by this? I'm really finding it frustrating. So many little annoyances and the missions are pretty repetitive.

If you scour the forums there's plenty of posts by me moaning about this game, so no, you aren't the only one.

oweneades I think you're smoking some quality weed if you think Far Cry 2 looks even 50% as good as Crysis :D

No I am really not smoking anything. In parts Farcry 2 looks absolutely stunning. Its interior sections are also vastly better than crysis (one of the latter games biggest weaknesses - also some textures in crysis are a joke).

And streetah how about an actual shot of the game not just a charater model. It also should be noted that if you compared the main character models in crysis (like you have done there) to the korean character models they also look a lot better so we could conclude that crysis looks better than itself?!

It does make me wonder sometimes that people reply without actually playing a game.

EDIT: this is a better comparison:

Those are publication photos, which are in no way a real indication of what the game actually looks like as they're touched up to buggery and back. I would say the ingame screenshots taken from the screenshot thread in the pc gaming forum are a much better indication.
