Far Cry 3 Thread

I was a huge fan of Far Cry and it's first sequel. I wasn't hugely taken by FC3 at first and found the sheer amount of side-missions and collectables etc. to be quite overwhelming. However I've been playing it for a few hours now and I'm really starting to get into it. Think I'm going to end up enjoying it as much as FC2 if not more. Not sure the first one can be topped though, for my money.

Post FX in Far Cry 3 cripples performance. Just turning it down from High to Medium makes a massive performance improvement here and it still looks great.

Disabling it altogether gives a *massive* improvement in performance and also makes it look a hell of a lot better

The respawning was probably the only thing but if they didnt the game would be boring (no one to shoot). The guns were broken cos the Africans were poor :)

I tried FC3 but couldnt get into it. Ill try again once Ive updated my system.

I could never understand the hysterical hatred that FC2 created. As you say, it had just one thing wrong with it. Big deal. Plenty of other games have a hell of a lot more flaws in them than that but are held up as darlings of the gaming world.
I think at the time Ubisoft was heavy on the DRM thing and that crapped a lot of people off but had nothing to do with the game-play.

FC2 was cool.

It was an interesting mixed bag rather than a total failure.

I was quite ready to hate it for any number of reasons but I actually thought it was an interesting little game in the same way that SOTL was.

Yeah once you got over the crazy enemy thing and the broken guns there was a lot of good stuff in there and it looked pretty good. I had some great fun with the IEDs. Also the buddy system was interesting, I still remember my main buddy, the guy from Northern Ireland who was a total nutjob, he was good fun.

Just making my way through the second island.

Have to say I've enjoyed it so far, however there are a few things that really take away from the experience for me and mean it doesn't really blow me away.

1. The games obsession with jump animations and otherwise removing control of your character. Case in point there is a tower where you have to jump on to a slightly twisted walkway which is side on to you, the game decided crouch jumping was just beneath it and would instead do the stupid "volt" animation and just throw me off the tower. That and things like the delay when you are trying to enter a car and the time it takes Jason to open and go through a door.

2. Repetitiveness. Beyond the story the secondary missions/tasks are horribly repetitive and mostly just boring. Also the side quests quality makes me think they were designed in a single lunch break.

3. NPC dialogue. A mixture of annoying accents and a miniscule list of lines they spout constantly makes me regularly take my Bull to friendly NPC's to shut them up. I think a large reason for this is how good the story NPC voice acting is in comparison.

Now these issues do not ruin the game for me but they are not what I would consider inconsiderable.

Wow disabling Post FX really does make the game look better and improves performance massively. Why on earth did they put this in the game and turn it on and up high by default? Bizarre.

Wow, really? I reduced it low and noticed a drop in quality - namely jagged edges on a woman's leg in the village you're in at the start of the game. I set it to medium which looked a bit better and gave much better performance than when I had it set on 'Ultra'.

I couldn't actually work out how to turn it off altogether - could someone please tell me how to do this? I imagine it involves editing a config file or something?

Run the game

Set video settings to custom

Exit the game.

Go to ... Documents/my games/Far Cry 3

Right click on Gamer profile xml and open with Notepad

CTRL + F Post FX Quality and set it it to "false" (it was high)

Save

Restart the game.

Enjoy.

I'm loving this game BTW

Maxed out at 2560 x 1440 and 65 fps looks nice. (Windforce 670 and 4.6 i5)

Shame about the paltry save game slots and the really annoying Sarf Africaan accents - " Ar Wis iwt hinting this mirning - Yir my Kizzin yew are the only Fimily I Hivv that's wirth a Dim. Do you like Jiz?

(OK I made that last bit up )

Otherwise quite good fun.

Thanks Boge. Strangely, this didn't work for me. I got a noticeable drop in image quality - quite bad jaggies on the grill of a jeep I was using for comparison. It also didn't really affect performance at all. But then again, I have v-sync turned on and it never dips below 60fps apart from occasionally in certain areas - the town with the coloured lights causes it to drop to around 55 but disabling PostFX did not stop this from happening.

Hey whatever works for you. Works for you. Personally I like what disabling post fx does to leaves and leafs and the environment in general. Can't say I've spent too much time examining Jeep grilles though.

All part of the fun right?

Haha, yeah there are better things to do with one's Sunday night! The grill was just the thing that really caught my eye in terms of jaggies after changing the settings and walking outside my little hut. It's considerably better/smoother for me just bumping PostFX up from 'Medium' to 'High'. I've also turned on triple buffering, and used adaptive v-sync over the in game v-sync. It runs smoother and the occasional dips aren't as bad. The lumber mill was particularly bad (dropped to ~45 fps) but I couldn't work out what it was in that area that was causing it.

Anyway, I'm happy with my settings now and can concentrate on enjoying the game. Just bought the 'canon'!

Slowly making my way through this again.

More I play, the more I enjoy it. It's quite good fun. Not perfect by any means.

And absolutely stunning in parts. The cenotes especially. The lighting can be fantastic!

Just playing all maxed out currently except with 2xAA, but have to disable vsync unfortunately as gets choppy if drops below 60fps. Which is not often, granted, but once is too much.
