Fast broadband speeds but most internet pages won't load or take a very long time to.

Hello,

The internet on my desktop computer is loading webpages very slowly or not at all. To give you some examples:

- amazon.com barely loads and when it does some pictures aren't there
- Youtube videos start off in 144p and when changed to a higher setting it either doesn't load or takes 5-10 minutes to buffer. Sometimes it buffers straight away but if so, I have been unable to watch a 10 minute video without waiting for it to buffer multiple times.
- non loading of pages when searching for quotes on confused.com

The above are just a few examples of many. Google searches and gmail seem to work OK a lot of the time.

We have BT fibre Halo 1 and internet speed tests are ok - 28.6 Mbps download, 4.83 Mbps upload.

All phones and devices on the wi-fi network work fine with no delays or issues. This issue described above seems to be just affecting this desktop computer which is using the wi-fi network.

I have rebooted the router, tried a different browser (currently using Microsoft Edge but had the same issues when trying Google Chrome), cleared browsing history and cookies etc, checked for system updates, restarted computer.

The issues did start after a power-cut. I don't know if that is a coincidence or not but we have never had an issue with power-cut / lightning related surges etc and as stated, only the desktop computer seems to be affected on the wi-fi network.

Any help in the right direction would be massively appreciated.

Please let me know if I have left out any information needed.

If the postcode you put for your location is accurate you don't have a huge choice of broadband providers but there are faster packages than you have and you can also register your interest for ultra fast broadband from open reach.

The halo one package you have appears to have been discontinued, hopefully it won't be too long before you have access to ultrafast full fibre; one page I found suggested halo 1 was quiet expensive which is unfortunate when alt nets like BRSK are offering 2000Mbps connections for £55 a month.

30Mbps up / 5Mbps down is woefully slow these days and can easily be brought to its knees, my 4G sim frequently gives me double your download speed and 10x your upload speed but comes with its own problems.

Its possible the WiFi channel changed when the router rebooted after you had the powercut and it could be conflicting with a neighbours router. I'd start by getting a cheap cat 5e network cable and try using that instead of WiFi for a bit to see if that helps.

You say phones and devices, how many people are trying to use the connection when you are using the PC?

To rule out a DNS issue without messing with the system settings you could try installing Opera, under security settings > Use secure DNS > Select DNS provider > select cloudflare 1.1.1.1 or one of the others if you prefer.

If you have got a spare USB drive you could also try a live boot linux distro like Mint (which may or may not find your WifI adapter) to rule out your Windows OS being corrupted by the powercut.

Sounds like you have a problem with the line. If you're on ethernet directly to the router and do a packet test to see if there's any loss then you'll need to contact BT for them to fix it. I had a similar issue years back with BT, and it was a fault with the port I was connected to on the cabinet. They changed my line to a different port and that fixed it.

OP's PC is on WiFi which is why I suggested he gets a Cat 5E cable first

"desktop computer which is using the wi-fi network"

OP can also set up BQM to monitor his line but he did say his other devices were working.
