'fast' games

I 'think' there were only 3 of them on PS1. Wipeout, Wipeout 2097, and Wip3out....... Might be wrong but someone here will know.

As for them seeming slow, they do start off that way, but in the top leagues using boosts over boost pannels can get insane!!
My fave is the original but perhaps that's just nostalgia.....

OMG HI-OCTANE!!!

Forgot all about that game, that must be coming on 10 years old now surely?

Immense game that was, absolutley loved it. So so so fun

1995 i think! Still got the box, cd and receipt somewhere at home. Looked really hard earlier for an image of it on the net but couldt find one (as i bought it in the first place)

Loked playing with that big round heavy ship

sorry. i have no idea what that means. Whats a reno style air race and whats FS9?

A Reno style air race is where you take bog standard WWII era fighters and boost them up to well over 5000hp and then you race them around pylons at 500mph and 50ft off the ground.

FS9 = Microsoft Flight Simulator 9, also known as MSFS: A Century of Flight. :)

How is the thread this long with nobody mentioning Wipeout??

Thats what i was wondering! still got Wipeout 2097 on PC, the peak of high speed racing IMO. I keep praying they'll do another one on PC one day (or preferably 360)

are yeh. I remember POD. My mate could run it with mmx and i couldnt. Was a great game from what i remember.

So was Megarace and megarace 2 if anyone remembers them. There was a crazy guy in the videos i think!

Lance Boyle! :D

I had Megarace on my 486, great game, and the cut scenes were very good for the time.

Wipeout 2097 is still the best racing game ever made though. Psygnosis published the fastest time they'd ever heard of as 18.1 seconds on the first track using the piranha sled. I hit 18.3 seconds using the same, so so close to their record. :D

^ is that from a game? Those trees look like real

No, that's a shot of two Sea Furies at the Reno race in real life. As for FSX, I couldn't comment, I refuse to buy it as I have close to 30GB's of add-ons for FS9 and the majority won't work with FSX. :mad:

I bought 'Ballistics' years ago, very cheap at the time too.

There is nothing I've played that's as insanely fast as this. But you've already listed it.

Ive had a go and the keyboard control feel all clunky. You press a key and it does a massive sweep either left or right, do you know how to make it not do this?

I only had it on the PSX. It was a far more polished game on the Playstation, even though the PC version supported OpenGL with anti-aliasing etc, it felt far more clunky.

Edit, That run's insane! :)

How do you get the music to work on the PC version of Wipeout 2097? There seems to be no music and the cd isnt detected as an audio cd either.

Just completed the first track and came second, took me about 6 go's though

yeh ure right, all other RTS just seem slow really. Hard to explain but people know once they have played it a few times

The unit speed in other RTS games may be quicker but I don't know any other RTS game where you can be making 150apm (actions per minute, aka mouse clicks and keyboard presses per minute) and still see huge room to be doing more actions. The pros are ridiculous and do up to 400 apm, that's almost 7 clicks a second!

Just play the soundtrack in the background, probably the only game soundtrack CD worth owning, some quality choons on there! :D

Motorhead? Seem to remember that was quite fast. :D

Funnily enough, apart from Quake, Motorhead is the only game I've had permanently installed on my games drive for the last 7 years or so (only 80meg and doesn't need any registry crap to run). However I've recently noticed that it doesn't seem to work under Vista, I'm running patch 3.0 with the geforce hud fix. Tempted to try a re-install and see if that works.

To be fair it's reasonably fast but I wouldn't say it was a quick as some of the other games mentioned in this thread. Being successful is more about being gentle enough in your turns, you can't afford to keep it floored round some bends and oversteering can be fatal. One of the reasons why it heavily favours analog steering - my housemate at uni used to use the mouse to steer!

Hi-Octane (fantastic game, doesnt work on XP :( )

Aparently it does. Download and install dosbox and insert these lines into the dosbox.conf file.

Code:
[sdl]
fullscreen=true
fulldouble=true
fullresolution=800x600
windowresolution=original
output=ddraw
autolock=true
sensitivity=100
waitonerror=true
priority=higher,normal
mapperfile=mapper.txt
usescancodes=false

[render]
frameskip=0
aspect=false
scaler=normal3x

[cpu]
core=auto
cycles=max
cycleup=500
cycledown=20

[mixer]

nosound=false
rate=22050
blocksize=2048
prebuffer=50

[midi]

mpu401=intelligent
device=win32
config=

I've not tested it though.
