Fast hatch around £4000 other than a Cupra R?

They're 0-60 time seems pretty slow, not sure what their 70-90 is like though. ;)

Edit: that one isn't a facelift. For me it would have to be the Compressor version or don't bother.

if you're looking at the official Toyota 0-60 time, then don't bother. Look at the Celica 190s time to get what it should be. They always seemed to have a much slower 0-60 than they actually do in real life, whether that was to sell more Celica 190s as on paper they were faster, I don't know.

But yes, against other cars it may not be the best choice, but at least it has Toyota's own vtak with none of the stigma ;)

(That is a facelift Andrew, headlights and white dials in the gauge cluster give it away. Pre-facelift T-Sports don't have the 'droop' in the headlight, and they have black dials)

Isn't this just urban legend to make Corolla owners feel better?

Think so. They claim the Elise 111R is no faster and it's just down claimed official stats on the CTS to stop Lotus losing sales

*shrug* It's what I've been lead to believe by Dad. I've seen video footage and been to a few Corolla meets with Dad where they've said it's definitely faster than what Toyota said, how accurate their timing gear was I don't know. Most people say around 7.5 secs rather than the official 8.4 secs. A lot of it probably depends if you can catch lift when changing to 2nd gear.

In the case of the Lotus however, I can't see why any Corolla owners would claim that seeing as the 111R would be a great deal lighter!

LCR is a great car and sounds just what your after, sensible enough for family duties but quick enough to mix it up when necessary, quick bit of fettling and a flash map will see you over 260 horses. don't discount the CTR though although finding a decent one is somewhat difficult these days (I know as I had a notion for one for a while.

LCR wise just search for posts by either myself or paradigm for some of the potential issues to look out for.loved mine to bits but they can be quite thirsty if driven hard.

alternatives to suggest.

A3 3.2s are falling into your price range theres good and bad ones out there like any older car. basically an R32 in a A3 shell, my old man had one up until recently and was a fantastic car. what about a scoob?

I've owned 2 Civic 1.6 VTI's, 2 Civic 1.8 VTI's, a facelift Corolla T-Sport and my current car is a 2.4 Accord Type-S.

All of these cars have a 0-60 quoted of around 8 seconds and I can assure you the Corolla is noticeably quicker than all of them

I also had an FN2 Civic Type-R and would say that was slightly quicker than the Corolla, really not much in it at all

I'm sure that the same myth was perpetuated by old Peugeot owners back in the day. They claimed that when Peugeot did their 0-60 tests they did it with a full tank of fuel, 5 adults in the car, dog in the boot, sack of cement on the roof and into a gale force wind whereas all other companies did theirs with an anorexic at the wheel being towed downhill by a Ferrari.

The one thing that put me off the Celica VVTLi was that it was slow so Toyota's marketing really backfired if they deliberately released crap 0-60 times.

Never understood the torque thing, just change down one.

But it's just easier if you have readily available torque all over the place. I got fed up with having to make sure my 2.0 golf was stoked up with revs to make sure it always had enough go. A 1.8t gets round that issue but is dull as anything but a 3.0 m3 works just great :-D
