Fast(ish) Diesels

Started poking about PH and AT for ideas... have to admit I don't think I've ever even seen a red E46 touring, so didn't fancy my chances at finding one.

No pictures yet, but does this sound the right sort of money for the car?

What are the odds of something like that coming up again in the next few months?

As a slightly different suggestion, maybe a Jag?

No idea how good they are to be honest, it just popped into my head!

Dad's got one of those - seeing as it's Mondeo based and has the same engine as my current car, it's not going to give me the extra oomph I'm after.

They did a 2.2D too but, again, I have to question if it's a big enough upgrade to make it worthwhile. The ride/quality is also disappointing if you compare it by Jag terms - considering the first time my dad drove my car, the first thing he said was "Ooh, its quiet compared to mine!"

Then again:

Not an X-Type :(

I have no idea about any Jaguars besides the XK's, so I wont take any responsibility for suggestions made :p

EDIT: To be honest, I knew one of them was Mondeo based, just wasn't sure which model.

No good for a dog, but still:

It HAS to have a bit of poke!

That XJ is pretty legendary iand!

One thing about the Avensis T180s is that the fuel economy isnt what the books says at all, better to go for the 150 version if you want the economy. Something to do with the particulate filter on the T180 maybe. Lots of torques though :p

The Avensis is always going to be a no ;)

What about this sort of thing - would this have the more powerful engine?

All facelift E39's - 2000X-2004/04 - have the 193bhp engine :)

That is a lot of money for an E39. The problem you have is that like some of the diesel Estate Mercs the residuals are a bit ridiculous. The 530d Sport Touring without huge miles is a very sought after car and the prices tend to reflect that.

That one is, however, overpriced. It's worth £10.5k from a dealer, tops, if its immaculate.

Add me to MSN if you wish to be bored to death about E39's.

Excellent....just trying to figure out if I like the E39 in touring form, I think the problem with that one is it looks like it has castor wheels on it. That and the ridiculously large model badge, but thats easy enough to fix

For reasons nobody has worked out - the 18's with wider rear fit just fine - BMW never offered anything bigger than 17" on the Touring. You can swap the model badge for one off an E60 which is smaller, or simply debadge it.

The E39 Touring has rear self levelling air suspension. It's fundamentally a reliable system, though.

I guess it shows how big the car is, that 17s look so small on it (to my eyes at least).

Are they meant to only have a single tailpipe?

Yes.

It's stupid. You'll regret reminding me now but how crap is the E39 Sport exhuast? It looks stupid and makes NO noise at all. Why doesnt it have a subtle twin like the Z4 and the 330i?

I thought the one on that car would be a dirty diesel specialty! Surely the petrols have something a bit better?

The diesels have a downward pointing one as in that pic, the petrols are a bit different - its a non-pointing-down stainless tailpipe thats huge.

It just looks a bit weird having a bumper cutout for an exhaust then having a downturned pipe - just draws attention to it!

Obviously straight pipes arent a great idea on a derv, although I quite like the fake ones you see on some cars :)

The 530d wasn't introduced at the same time as the rest of the Sport range, originally you could only get Sport as a 528i, 535i and 540i. I guess the kit was designed around a petrol exhuast.

Same thing with 320d and 330d exhuasts IIRC.
