fast linux distro .. for windows noobs

I was using mint 13 Xfe edition , staggering that doing something
as simple as changing the screen res could bork it so that I could not login, wtf

Going to try kubuntu for a giggle

There doesn't seem to bit much KDE love round here - what's wrong with Kubuntu or Fedora et al with a KDE spin?

KDE when i used to use it was nicer to look at, but i found it very cranky and too much bloat - no way near as stable or as efficient as Gnome. I found Gnome dull, but it worked and was rock solid....

No idea where we're up to at the moment, but KDE was iffy....

As for a distro, Ubuntu was always the best for me. will try mint, though.

Well, I took some of the advice further up the threads and downloaded Linus Mint Mate. I installed it onto a memory stick and am running it now. Thanks to downloading Google Chrome I have all my bookmarks for browsing etc.

I must say it runs very well straight off the memory stick and seems very simple to use. Is Cinnamon similar to use? The picture on the Linux Mint site look quite similar. However, I do have a question.

How do I install it so that it dual boots alongside Windows? Currently quite a lot I do on the computer would work fine on Linux but there are some important programmes and Steam games that require Windows.

Well, MATE is a fork of GNOME 2 and Cinnamon is GNOME 3 adapted to look more similar to GNOME 2. So Cinnamon is similar to MATE except built on newer technology and more likely to see updates in the future. It is slightly slower than MATE if you have old hardware but I also find it a lot nicer to use. Honestly, I do not see why anyone would prefer MATE to Cinnamon unless they either have old hardware or are long-time Linux users who are completely used to GNOME 2..

As for your other question, when you select which drive to install it on, assuming there is enough space on your hard drive, there should be an option which says "Install alongside Windows 7" or something along those lines.

To be safe i would defrag your Windows installation first, but yeah - the installer will give you the option to set up partitions. Then you just pick between them at boot.

And be careful if dual booting im a Noob @ Linux also and i lost 1.5 TB of DATA!!!

During boot up i had a blank screen and was thinking i had installed it wrongly again 4th time this was would take a while to load into linux i pressed the arrow keys and ended up in memtest so i knew that grub was there but just couldn't see anything anyway some searching later i found the solution.

Solution

In system file /etc/default/grub , un-comment the line that says #gfx640x480 by removing the #

and change GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=FALSE , To TRUE.

Save & Close.

Open a Terminal , sudo update-grub ,Enter & restart.

Done.

This reply might be a bit late but I suggest trying Pinguy.
I tried loads of Linux OS' including Mint, fedora and Ubuntu and think Pinguy is easily the best one to use.
