Fast quad bikes on the road

A friend of mine has a raptor 750 quad.
Widened rear axel, wide, dishes road wheels + tyres, straight through exhaust, trip computer, upgraded nerf bars - all the mod cons. 0-60 is about 4 or 5 seconds and it'll top out at just shy of 110mph.

They're great fun on the road, he has it because he likes to take it off road too, so if he's going to that he swaps his wheels over and then rides to wherever he's going, has a play, then rides home.

This is the third one he's had now and he loves them (He's also got an R33 Skyline).

I have two friends both with road legal quads and also my boss races quads with one setup for road legal use. The simple reason as to why people use them is that they're nuts. Totally stupid things, you've got about 50-60hp in a roller skate.

My friend has a Yamaha Banshee which is a 350 two stroke twin and it's absolutely ace, as soon as it comes into the powerband it just rips and not much apart from a motorbike can keepup with it to about 60mph.

The other guy has a Yamaha Raptor 660 which is equally as fun, but having a large amount of torque the front just wants to pickup in the first three gears. Loads of pure grunt.

If you get a chance try one, not as good as a motorbike in my oppinion, however they are just so much fun!

for once i agree with fox though , if you ride sensibly then a bike is no more dangerous than a quad

your just as ****** if somoene pulls out infront of your quad as you are on a motoorbike

Oil, diesel, wet drain covers? On a quad chances are the quad will slide, on a bike chances are YOU will slide on your arse.

All three of which can be dealt with by proper observation.
I can see the fun aspect, but to justify it as a great practical advantage over a bike is ridiculous. As said above, all the disadvantages of both a car and a bike.

a lot of disabled peeps get these just to get the wind back in their face again
if you cant ride a bike anymore for what ever reason get a quad or a trike

Same as a car doesn't crash unless you drive into something?

thats what he was trying to say..

your fairly safe if you crash in a car though

he was trying to say that a bike and quad are equally dangerous therefore why buy a quad ? buy a bike

there is no advantage to owning a quad over a bike imo

coming from a motrocyclist of 11 years, thats just wrong tho.

Does anyone know the legalities of having a quad on the road with regards to license and engine size?

I get the impression you can ride them on a full driving license, are there any restrictions to engine size like on motorbikes before you've got a certain amount of experience etc?

Cheers.

First result in google for 'quad bike car license' brings:

What driving licence do I need?

* You need a full car licence (or pre 1999 bike licence) to ride a quad on the road.
* At the moment you can't pass a driving test on a quad.

Seems they pretty much count as a car.

there legal on the isle of man aslong as they have a break and front real lights.. indicators not needed
