Toying around with getting a new weekend toy... spending money is a top hobby.

Considering getting a new toy after christmas and it should meet the following:

1. Saloon /maybe Coupe
2. Budget £5500 maybe a little more
3. Powerful/Quick ie sub 6 approx

So far ive been considering:

Audi S4/S6/S8
Audi A6 4.2
Skyline GTSt
BMW 540i
VW Passat W8

etc etc

Top choice at the moment is spending a bit over budget and bagging a 2000 Audi S6.

Any other choices?

I remember you had a DC2 but the roads up there aren't great are they?

So you need something with a nice compliant suspension?

DC2 was nice enough, but not quite quick enough and not as good as I thought it would be.

I wouldnt mind a dc5, but budget wont reach.

Basically, a Galant Vr4 is perfect, but I fancy something new to tinker with.

W8 Passats suck.
Driven one, have you?

If you manage to get an S4 for £5k it will be a very tatty example and will likely cost a small fortune to run. £5k is bottom of the barrel money for an S4. For a decent one you'd ideally need around £10k. The same goes for the S6/S8 although you might have a bit more choice with the 6 and 8 because people won't touch them with a bargepole. It's a buyers market with them.

If I were in your position I would go for a BMW 540i, although I would make sure I had a few grand to the side in case the worst happened, which is likely on such a car. They're dirt cheap for a reason, that reason being if they go wrong they cost a small fortune to fix. Out of all your choices, the E39 is the best all round car.

540i but you will need very deep pockets. Mind you that applies to everything on your list.

W8 Passats suck.
How? Passats are well regarded. W8 produces lots of power. They are very cheap. It has 4wd and every toy you can think of. They are cheap.

The only sucky thing is the running costs, which are probably less than a 540i.

I mean everything on this list is cheap because they cost an arm and a leg to run. Go into it with your eves open and you might not be too surprised.

No doubt he'll spout the usual carp about the VAG 4 wheel drive system not being 'proper'. Isn't that right Foxy :D
From what I have seen, the Passat W8 is a good car. I haven't driven one but my old boss used to drive one when he was in the police and he always praised it as a pursuit vehicle.

Regardless, I still reckon the 540i is a better car. If the W8 Passat is anything like the normal Passats then the steering feel and driver feedback sucks.

Well no, more the fact it is a fast Passat and thus nothing like the rest of the machinery mentioned here.

Id consider an Evo 4 RS or similar, but not keen on scooberoos.

Accord, ST200, Saabs dont meet my performance expectations :)

Old S8's are probably the biggest potential money pit of all of those, these were 60K cars when new and have electric everything, and if something goes in one of them you're looking at mega money on them.

They also suffer from the "lifetime gearbox oil" rubbish and if the previous owners actually took that at face value then you are likely to have problems.

S6 I don't think you'll find a V8 one for under 7K unless its totally knackered, and even a 7K one is going to be marginal.

S4 your talking a 2.7T model for that sort of money and even then you're looking at 7K again for the oldest/worst examples.

Another option is a 2.7T A6 quattro sport and get it chipped.

Otherwise its nippon rocket territory really for that sort of dough and that sort of performance expection.

You could have course lower you sights performance wise on the 0-60 to sub 7secs and get a 6cyl 5 series beemer
