Fast Saloon for £5000ish

Well no, more the fact it is a fast Passat and thus nothing like the rest of the machinery mentioned here.

Skyline GTS is just a fast version of four door japanese minicab saloon.
Audi A6 4.2 is jusr a fast version of a suburban GP favourite A6 saloon.
BMW 540 worth noting is just a fast version of run around mill town 5 series.
Why is W8 different again?

For about £5K you will get a Nice S14a with reasonable mileage and a few mods running about 250-300BHP...

That is where my money would go, you may also be able to pick up an R32 GTST in the price range too.

how about a leon cupra R, should get one around that price mark now, then get it REVO'd, should see ~6 seconds quite easily.
alternatively, an older evo 4? dunno what they go for nowadays, but they certainly are quick :D

He won't get a Leon Cupra R for £5k. He might get a 20VT. Another option is of course a Seat Toledo 20VT, essentially the same car as the Leon 20VT but with a boot, and a lot cheaper as well.

Although to be fair, Seats aren't really in the League of cars he is looking at. From what I can see he is more interested in bigger saloons with bigger engines.

E36 M3 Saloon?

They are brilliantly setup, you can push them quite hard and have fun. It'll hit 160+mph and zoom to 60 in well under 6 seconds.

Sound great too.

Considering getting a new toy after christmas and it should meet the following:

Budget £5500 maybe a little more

So far ive been considering:

Audi S4

The very very cheapest S4's are always around the £8,000 mark. A decent one will be more like £10,000. You may find one for less than £8000 occasionally but there's almost certainly something wrong with it, or it's got a expensive service that's due imminently.

£5k could buy Volvo S60 T5 or 2.4T but that's too "slow", right?

LOL....too slow.

Personally i think the OP is in a dream world and is pretty much expecting a star car for nothing.

The S60 T5 goes like stink......as do the other cars listed, but to get a decent runner of any in the list is hoping a lot!

You been reading the thread?

My dream world as you call it is quite realistic actually. M3's/M5's/vr4 etc etc all fit the bill to my "dream world", but im after other options that I 'may' have not thought about.

The T5 is a nice car btw, yes driven one, but no, not quite in the same bracket as an m3/m5/vr4 etc

Back to reality, ive thought of another option.

The Toyota Aristo 3.0 Twin Turbo

Performance barges certainly seem like odd choices for weekend cars, these are cars more suited for covering vast distances at high speed rather than blatting around twisty country roads. They are also in the "dangerous purchase" zone where the cars you can afford will be the worst example of their kind and therefore more prone to require expensive work during your ownership.

Is 4 seats and a large boot really a requirement for your weekend car?

Well... if it's back to reality... VR4 is 7.3 second car, if my memory serves me correctly. T5 is 6.3 second car. Drives better and is in completely different league in terms of equipment.
True, neither belong in the same bracket as M3 or M5 but, to put it softly, you don't get to own M3/M5 under £5k. And if you find one, you should steer well clear.
