Fast Sync - reviews?

I think this is going to be one of those 'in development' technologies that aren't necessarily ready to go, or will need time to be implemented into actual titles.

Also realize that its biggest use will be VR, as that's where the latency reduction is really going to be most useful. This is not going to be a superior replacement for normal v-sync in flat gaming.
 
Not an independent review but Nvidia's Tom Petersen went into the subject a little more in the PcPer interview:


I'd imagine it's a hard feature for even a well-informed techie to measure and review objectively without the right sort of equipment. Especially the input lag, if not the tears.

Fast Sync is available right now in the NVC if you have a Pascal card, Brilliant and better IMO alternative to V-Sync, Gets rid of tearing and there isn't that horrible latency from standard V-Sync, Also allows the frames to exceed your monitors refresh without tearing and while you won't see them it does help with input lag, Latency etc... Basically it's made standard V-Sync obsolete :)

Actually, it doesn't get rid of tearing when the frame rate is below the refresh rate. It's only a helpful solution for where the frame rate rises well above the refresh rate. That is from my understanding of the Nvidia videos, anyway.

I haven't been able to get this to work myself. If I select 'Fast' for VSync in the Nvidia Control Panel then fire up a game, it seems to revert to using normal VSync. Obviously I have VSync disabled in the game itself?

Working really well here. I am a big fan of G-Sync and can have both running for smooth gameplay within the monitors refresh rate but when it goes over, FastSync kicks in and I have not seen tearing or stutter. No idea what is going on but it works, so happy days.

Have you enabled gsync but set vsync to off in the NVCP? I own a gsync monitor and play with vsync on to ensure that the refresh rate doesnt exceed the monitor refresh rate. The only way fast sync will work is if the rendered frames exceed the monitors refresh rate. Gsync will kick in when < max monitor refresh rate.

what is the input lag like compared to no gsync and vsync off - the amount will be noticeable in fps games for comparison if you wanted to test it ;)

I can't see the Fastsync option in the control panel????

Try reinstalling your drivers, Maybe a conflict somewhere :confused:

If there is any input lag, I certainly haven't noticed it and setting FastSync in the NCP is a direct replacement for V-Sync IE, you can't have both V-Sync and FastSync as that would be a conflict of the 2.
 
Figured it out. You can't use it if you run dual monitors for some bizarre reason. I might have to use Nvidia Inspector to force it.
 
Wait so if i run Vsync as "Fast" i get all the benefits of Vsync off as long as i stay above my refresh rate (120hz = 120fps) i get no tearing and half the input lag because the buffers have magic sauce now? Hmm normally i use Vsync but i maintain my refresh anyways this would be great for me because i would just have to back down a little and make sure im over the refresh rate. Thats not a bad deal in my case it would only mean dropping down a setting or two. So is this correct? I'll have to round up £300 out of somewhere for a 1080 pronto.


The only other real question i have additionally is would this be smoother than limiting the fps to 120, Versus letting the system run at 135 or so with FastSync?

FastSync is true wizardry, I'm convinced Nvidia bundled a mini wizard into the 1080's :p

In all seriousness Fast Sync is great, Has made V-Sync obsolete :)
 
Yea it is part of the bait to buy a new series last time it was the 9 series with DSR that was a complete game-changer i simply could not live without 4K/120fps now in certain games without MSAA.

This will go nicely then DSR 4K/120 + FastSync + Eizo 240hz strobing :D
 
From the vid he only recommends it if you can go to over double your monitor hz, ie 120hz monitor you'd need to be rendering at over 240fps. If you can't do this then you get slight judder as occasionally the monitor will ask for a frame to be rendered before the gpu has rendered the last correct one. The judder is probably not noticable on a 120hz+ monitor but you can really see it on a 60hz one when the fps is down about 80.
