Hey guys,

Sorry if this is in the wrong section.. but the internet is my life - so...yeah... :p

Anyway, i'm currently on 2meg broadband from Orange - I'm tired of the slowness...

I saw the offer for Sky Broadband (£10 a month - 16mb) and thought wow.. great deal - sign me up!

However im only in my 5th month of my contract with Orange so they will not release this "MAC Code" that I apparently need to switch.

The plan was to keep the Orange broadband running while I pay for the Sky broadband aswell - but theres a 1 ISP per line limit.

So really.. i'm asking for advice on where to go from here - I want fast internet and maybe a new phone line.. since that one has been up forever. (How would I do this?)

Would anyone know a way around this?

Cost doesn't really matter - be reasonable though...

Be there.co.uk.......you can get up to 24meg. That's what am on (it depends though on several factors) :)

You are approximately 1.25km from the exchange (straight line distance).

bethere.co.uk's pro package.. WOW!

I want it!!

Thanks for the help guys :D

Did you check the avaliable speed?

1.25km is a long distance, you won't see much more than 2mb with that distance I wouldn't think.

Depends on the line and his attenuation. I'm about that far from my exchange and can hold a solid 8128 sync.

I'm with them, and my speed, at exactly the same distance (give or take a few) is 5mb down and 1.3 up, so not too bad

Don't be fooled by the straight line distance. it's cable distance you need to know. I'm within a ¼ mile of my exchange, I am on a 8Mb connection but I get 6.5Mb downloads.

Straight line distance is a good indicator of the fastest you can expect though, since the cable can't exactly be shorter than the straight line distance.

This is incorrect I am almost 2km from my exchange straight line and I can synch at up to 10mb with a copper line thats older than me. I choose to lower my sync hto 8mb as it is better for gaming.

Best way to find out is to check your Line Attenuation on a normal adsl line then add 5db and that gives the approximate LA you will have on ADSL2+. You can then use this graph to approximate what you can expect to receive:

http://www.beforum.co.uk/forum/default.aspx?f=2&m=3875

There are also way sopf improving your LA but that is for another time perhaps.

Also BT wholesale gives incorrect information regarding your line. I can synch at almost double what their site says I should.

That is true, but it's zero indicator of the lowest speed you might end up with (you might be half a mile from the nearest exchange, but have your cable routed miles out of the way, or even to an older exchange that is further away).

Did you just say 8mb is better for gaming?

Why would that be?

If he can sync at 10, it might suggest his line isn't that stable at that speed, so he pushed his SNR up to get a lower sync and a more stable connection.

Gaming doesn't even use the full bandwitdh of a 512K connection.

Is your line in poor condition?

I'm 2km(straight line)from the exchange and sync at 7400+ 24/7 & have a rock solid 6.5mb profile :D

I sync at 7616/448 and it connects at, but yeah I think there's some dodgy line inbetween me and the exchange. For now though the 6.5Mb will suffice.
