Hey guys,
I feel that the HDD (5400-rpm Serial ATA Hitachi drive i think) in my core 2 duo macbook is causing a bottle neck in performance and would like to upgrade the drive to somethin faster.
I haven't really had the chance to look into what the best option is, can anyone help me out? Also, how much of a hit would it likely have on battery life , moving up to a 7200 rpm notebook drive?
Thanks in advance..

The Seagate 7200.2 range promises to be pretty special but isn't available yet with no ETA either. Other than that I'm not really up to speed on 2.5" HDDs although the Hitachi E7K100s look pretty nippy.

Power consumption is difficult to judge, the E7K100 uses about 2.5W when active vs 2.0W for the 5400rpm equivalent but it idles at 2.0W as opposed to 0.8W which I suppose will make a fair difference.

Seagate 7200.2
Power Consumption
Read/Write/Active Idle (watts, 25°C)
2.1/2.1/1.3

Wow - I want one of those - it's on their site but can't see anything about availability?

All the drives, Seagate Momentus 5400 PSD, Seagate Momentus 5400.2 FDE and Seagate Momentus 7200.2 will be available by the first half of calendar 2007 and will be available in 40GB to 160GB capacities

mmmm... could be any day now then?

I have been askign about these for 2 months, but no one gives me an answer?

If you have a 5k160 drive then it is not that much slower than a 7K100. I have both connected to my HTPC.

In addition to power usage you have to consider temperature; the cooling of most laptop HDD bays is not great. You can easily add 10C+ for a 7200rpm drive over a 5400rpm drive so check what the current one runs at.

I have been using a 7,200rpm Hitachi drive in my Dell Lappy for the last three years. Not really sure what it did to the battery life - don't think I really noticed.

The main thing to be aware of is heat. The faster spinning drive will be warmer. Which gives me a nice warm wrist wrest. :)

IMHO - Definately buy one.... much faster and easier to use. Makes the laptop feel closer to a desktop again. Especially noticable when installing software. :D
