whats the fastest 500 gb drive to replace my 80 gb hitachi deskstar with ?

i have a gigabyte ds4 mobo , will that be sata 1 or 2 , or are the 2 compatiable ?

also will i see better performance with the new drive , or should i just get a 150gb raptor x ? i am running vista x64 i dont care much for the extra storage i just need a faster drive , as the hitachi just doesnt cut it any more?
 
In benchmarks the Seagate 7200.11 is the quickest you'll get however there are other options worth considering:

The Samsung T series one isn't much slower but is on special this week, £13 less than the Seagate or there's the WD AAKS which again is pretty well up there in speed terms and is also cheaper than the Seagate.
 
The Samsung drive is pretty fast and virtually silent. I would say go for that also because it's on special offer this week only :).

Get the 10k Raptor if speed is what your after over storage space!
