Hi guys, i am looking to upgrade my CPU but dont really want to be shelling out hundreds to upgrade my whole system to i7
what would be the most powerful CPU for the socket 775 (at around £300)

thanks again :)

Fastest 775 CPU is the QX9650, but these are about £1000 (The QX9770 is LGA771 iirc, but might be 775, can never remember.)

That leaves the non extreme Q9650 at the top of the quad core end.

lol thanks for the EPIC fast replys. yea i do like the look of the Q9650 and i think i will probably get that. is it a good overclocker?

Seen them go past 4GHz without too much trouble. Fastest Ive seen in the forums was up at about 4.7 but most will be around 4.2 - 4.4 if I remember correctly :)

i just want a really powerful CPU for gaming etc. my E6750 is getting a little sliggish now and i want a quad core. i would go i7 but i think i could get more performance out of £300-400 by just getting a nice new CPU. feel free to tell me im wrong :) lol

All the Core 2 Quad Extremes (65nm: QX6700 @ 2.67GHz, QX6800 @ 2.93GHz, QX6580 @ 3.0GHz; 45nm: QX9650 @ 3.0 GHz, QX9770 @ 3.2 GHz) are S775. All of them are in the range of £800+. If you have this money I'd just get a new motherboard with S1366. But you don't, so as above, I'd get the Q9550 and OC it to around 3.6GHz.

The QX9775 is what you were thinking of Vox, it's S771 and designed specifically for the Intel Skulltrail Dual Socket motherboard.

Thanks, did some Googling for QX9770 reviews and was 775, but remembered it being said somewhere about 771, must have been a SkullTrail review I was thinking of that mentioned the QX9775.

Thanks for clearing that up :D.

unlocked multiplier:D

however i think you could probs go am3:D

40£ if not less than a Q9650:D

EDIT: yeh save up for i5 then u'll have usb 3 and stuff:D

Why not sell your mainboard and cpu and then spend £300 for an i5 750 and the LGA1156 botherboard for approximately £300ish? It would work out better than upgrading to an older chip with lesser performance.

Spending £300 on a LGA775 chip is a really bad idea.

If you can't get a second hand one then look to upgrade to i7 or i5 when it comes out.

Totally agree with the previous 2 posts. Dropping that kind of £££ on an "old" set up seems a bit pointless to me, still each to their own.
