Hi there! I have an AMD X2 6000+, a Gigabyte MA770 UD3 mobo, 3 Gb of DDR2 RAM and a Nvidia 275GTX. Thinking about changing the CPU
1} Which is the fastest Cpu i can have? Phenom 965? Any other coming soon worth waiting for?
2} Do you think the CPU bottlenecks the system? Will i see any REAL, NOTICABLE performance difference? Cpu depended games (like Mass Effect 1) run a bit laggy @ 1680*1050 (in comparison to ME2 which runs perfect)
Many thanks in advance!!!

Wait for the end of the month the X6 processors are out which may work for you and/or lower the price of the current quads. I'm guessing a move to a 965be would mean you'd have no bottleneck...

How quick is your hard disk? Do you have Windows 7? Those can help boost speed too.

I have Win XP 32bit and the hard disc is a Seagate 750Gb.
So, do i wait for the new 6 core CPU's?
Will they fit in AM3 mobo's?
Most important, will they be NOTICABLE increase in performance ?

In gaming? Not massively noticeable, but you can expect a nice boost in higher-end gaming. Although if you really want to benefit you'd have to upgrade your graphics card too (for dx11).

Not to sure i noticed like a 50-100% boost on most of my games after moving from a E5200 @ 3.2Ghz to a i7 @ 4Ghz :p but then again i have a 4870x2 /doh.

i personally wouldnt go for a six core ... yet. quads have been out for over 3 years now, and most applications have only started making use of them in the last 12-18months. games even more recently.

i would wait for these x6 chips to come out and then go for a 965/955 as the price might drop a little.

theres also going to be quad cores based on the six core dies (with 2 disabled). i dunno if these will come out with the six core ones or a bit later, but bagging one of them gives you the extra bonus of potentially getting two extra cores for free :)

Depends, AMD aren't including ACC in the 8** chipset boards which are mainly what these new chips will work with. But certain manufacturers have still included a way of unlocking cores, so you know...

What speed can you get out of the 6000+ exactly? I can't remember what a X2 6000+ even is at stock let alone what they clock to.

Frankly a 555BE will do you good, dual core, with a very good chance of unlocking to be a quad core, but even as a dual core, a chip that will hit 3.5Ghz with complete ease and probably do 4Ghz with any kind of decent cpu heatsink and you'll have a significantly faster chip as its faster clock for clock and likely well over 1Ghz faster on each core, if you get all 4 cores it would be a massive bonus.

But I'd suggest that 3Gb could be limiting aswell, its not a triple channel mobo so you should really have 2 or 4 sticks, in 2gb/4gb/8gb numbers. Its fairly likely you're not running at close to optimum in terms of memory there not least because 3gb will simply not be enough for some games aswell as the fact it will be significantly slower in single channel.

I'd move to 4gb, though single 1gb sticks to top you up to 4gb aren't normally a good value way to buy memory.

So memory to 4gb, a new cpu, dual to quad core, or take a gamble on a dual unlocking to a quad, any newer chip will be significantly faster anyway.

Hi I have the same Mobo as you (see signature) and, while my CPU will not unlock to anything other than a x2 I am bery happy with it. I had it running at 4.18Ghz but it would not remain stable when gaming i.e Crysis, Far Cry2, COD MW2. So I had to drop to 3.9Ghz and no problems so far.
