So the install I have with Ubuntu 8.10 is loading up in just under 20 seconds. I was wondering if there is any Linux version that loads faster (not that 20 seconds is slow!!)? I mainly use this install for web browsing, msn and sometimes music.

My current spec:

QX9650 3ghz - 3.6ghz
Geil Black Dragon 6gig DDR2 800mhz
Asus Maximus Formula
500GB 7200rpm Hard Drive 90% vista 64bit 10% linux 64bit
Power color ATI 4870 512mb

I am just looking to experiment with different linux versions. :)

Why do you have such a beast for web browsing, music, and msn? >_>

! right, you have Vista too, so that would imply some gaming i guess.

Edit: You could try Xubuntu, thats for lower specced systems, but to be honest 20 secs is very fast for a mechanical driver anyway

I gave my spec in case 20seconds was the limit for my pc. I use vista for gaming mostly but the linux for everything else lol. I thought 20seconds was pretty fast but i saw forums from years ago saying their pcs were loading in 10 to 15 seconds so just wondering how this is possible.

Well more or less any other linux distro is faster than ubuntu.... *hides under the flame proof jacket*

Anyway things like Arch and gentoo have much faster boot times when you spend some time to set them up, also debian has a supprisingly quick boot time if you do a manual install...

by not using vista, mostly. i never found ubuntu to boot very quickly either.

windows 7 boots a lot quicker, but failing that just put it in standby. up and running in 5 seconds or less

Lol so if my pc is loading ubuntu and it is the slow one i could probably see even faster load times? I know ubuntu seems to have the best support in terms of distros what is the driver and program support for Arch and gentoo?
@above. I meant their pc loaded in that time using linux boots. I know vista is crap for boot times! I dont want to keep it on standby either since i unplug it when not using it.
20seconds isnt long to wait but i just wondered if there were faster.

Asus express gate linux boots in under 4 second on my setup! have that!

Though takes about 20-25 seconds to boot into Debian

Is that a bios mod or just a line based one?
Edit- i wiki search later it looks pretty good. Must have a look into that. It sounds perfect for my needs lol

What does it matter?

All distros boot as fast as the enabled functions allow them too.
Distros that load naff all will indeed boot faster than something intended for more robust use.

It matters a lot is the answer, if every PC in the world booted in 5 seconds there would be a HUGE power saving across the world:eek:

In reality I love the Asus Express Gate as it gives you the option of booting your PC in 5 second to go check your email / do a bit of skye or MSN chat. What's the point of booting Debian for that?
