Hi,

I've had an AMD 3200 Venice for about 3 years, overclocked to 2.6 ghz, and I think its time to upgrade.

I don't have enough money to build a new C2 duo pc.

What are some of the fastest CPUs for skt 939?

Also which ones would have the best overclocking potential?

I have an asus a8v deluxe and a zalman 9500 cooler, currently it runs 24`C idle and maxes out at 32` under full load.

Thanks

The fastest processor is FX-60 but your going to spend about £120 to get one of those second hand and more if it's new. At that sort of price you can get an Intel set up that when overclocked would out perform it and would give you the option to upgrade in the future.

If you don't want to spend that much then you could get X2 3800 or 4200 for arround the £40 mark. Which even if overclocked won't offer much over your current CPU in single treaded software but the second core would benfit in making your system smoother and more and more programs are now designed for duel core processors.

Personally i would save up and go the intel route at the moment. The Processors are faster and DD2 is so much cheaper than DDR.

having a S939 system myself, i did a bit of research in to it and as Geffen said, the fastest was the FX-60, and a close second was the 4800+... but boh of them are bad ideas price/performance wise and rare no less... chuck in a 4200+ and another gig of ram, and you ought to be okay... What's your rig like???

also, you could try an Opteron chip???

4200+ and overclock it, 99% will hit 2.75Ghz, many will reach 2.9 to 3.0Ghz on air & under 1.4v (LCB9E), dont bother with 4400+ or 4800+ as they still sell for over £150 on 2nd hand markets. Opertons even, but again the prices are over inflated. ;)

First of all, Thank you for your posts, very helpful :D

The price of the fx60 is ridiculous. Not worth it imo. So im scrapping the idea of upgading lol. I'm gonna have to build a new rig :D.

I did a search round my house finding useless stuff that i dont use, (ipod, psp, 9800 pro, some HDDs, and a couple of old mobile phones, router. etc...) I estimate i'd be able to make about 350-400 from selling all that.

So hopefully with that £350-400 im gonna get this: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-101-OK&groupid=701&catid=339&subcat=1067

Then i'll sell my current pc (3200+, nvidia 7800gs, 1gb ram, zalman 9500 cooler and 500watt unbranded psu) for about £100-120, That should get me a nice Nvidia 8600, and a branded psu. Do you think that price for my current bits is OK?

Hopefully i'll be able to pull this off, i just need some motivation

The bundle you picked looks good but rather expensive. You could build something yourself for a lot less for example.

Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
(£65.79)
G.Skill 2GB DDR2 PK PC2-8500C5 (2x1GB) CAS5 Dual Channel Kit (F2-8500CL5D-2GBPK)
(£58.74)
Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - OEM
(£157.44)

Total : £291.66

Personally when i was in the same boat i went with E2180 which should clock to 3ghz and a system based on that will cost about £160.

Agreed, would be easy to shave £100 off from wide selection of diff parts, and build PC of equal peformance as shown above^.

Ok thanks for info, but great news for me:...

I asked my mum to give me a 500-600 loan, and i think shes gonna let me :D

I told her i'd give her all my EMA for a year at college when i get it. :D

I think i'll start a new thread later, for your very useful opinions/recommendations.

Thanks

Considering the last batches of the X2 3800+ are available for less than £50 and many would achieve 3Ghz relatively easily, I wouldn't give up on your old system just yet.

If you can get either an Opteron (165/170) or the above that is 'guaranteed' to 3Ghz - I'g say that was a worthwhile upgrade. You will see a far bigger improvement by spending the extra cash on a better GFX card (if gaming is your thing) than by going conroe ;) The jump to dual core will probably be more than enough for general usage now - unless you're really into encoding?

I recently dropped my 3 y/o 3200 for a 4200 for something like £45 and although the difference isn't that noticable in day-to-day, it is twice as fast when compiling (I'm a programmer). Oh and yeah, the thing clocks to 2.75GHz without breaking a sweat :)
Should definately tide my machine over until a time when I can be arsed to properly upgrade...

Take the 4200.
