so seeing as how ram prices are gonna be up and up for the next few years, i was wondering what upgrade path do i have from my amd 5900x?
i get the 5950x is an option but does intel 12th gen use ddr4 and perform better?

See if you can get 100mhz or so OC out your 5900x, or switch it for a 5800X3D.
They are very sought after CPUs though, so expect to pay >£250 used.

I went from a 5800X to a 5800X3D which is slower at everything aside from gaming. It was astonishing how much faster the 3D was in games though.

12900K is faster than the 5900X, but when the 5900XT(despite the name, also 16-core)/5950X are available there wouldn't be much point, since you'd need a new board as well.

+1 on 5800X3D

I upgraded to one from a 5950, much better for gaming.

Still LOVING my 5800x3d, its still going strong and coping with every game ive thrown at it, even bf6, do have some ddr5 ram that a good friend kindly gave me in the summer before the madness began just incase i want to upgrade,
dont really need to though, maybe a gpu and psu upgrade would benefit me more as still running my trusty 4070.

Actually a DDR4 13700k (even at stock) is faster across the board in gaming than a 5800X3D.

I have both in my house which is why I know this to be the case. ;)

Though if you're already on AM4 then a 5800X3D is easily your best option for gaming.

Is your 5900x struggling? I imagine it's still pretty rapid for most work. I swapped one out for a 9800x3d and although it's a big improvement in gaming, work wise I don't notice any difference.

AM4 is the best platform for DDR4, I would say you already have the second best CPU for what you are doing on that plaform, the 5900X, I also have one of those although my main system for the last couple of years has been a 7900X3D, a reasonable upgrade for general use but a big one for gaming, mostly due to the X3D bit. I suppose if you can find a 5950X at a good price and trade in, it might be worth it, but otherwise, not really. An AM4 X3D chip will not be an upgrade for your usage profile, it would only give you a boost in gaming really, infact it wouldn't just not be an upgrade, it would be a straight downgrade due the loss of cores.

Those who got a 5800X3D have a great chip on their hands still! I’d happy swap my 9900k platform for it but nevertheless I was hoping to upgrade next year but looks like that will be put on hold

14900K is surely the fastest DDR4 CPU?
I love AMD CPUs and the AM4 platform has been fantastic but from what I've read there's numerous LGA 1700 CPUs which are faster. Not saying they're better just faster.

Not a recent system, but my X299 10980XE with quad channel DDR4 memory blew away most DDR5 memory, tight timings @4000mHz and the results were almost obscene. I do miss that system, loads of PCie lanes, I wish there was something comparable now as I run a sort of hybrid graphics/server for art and a bit of gaming.

I've got one in the cupboard, but the 5900x in my sig doesn't seem to be struggling to run anything.

I am curious about what kind of uplift I'll get when I eventually get round to installing the 5800x3d.

Edit: if anyone has done the 5900x to 5800x3d swap, I'd be interested to hear what they thought of that upgrade.

There are tons of options that will beat any x299 system into the dirt in all sorts of fantastic ways.

Intel’s chips really need DDR5 to stretch their legs. If you had some godlike B-die, could stomach the power draw and are prepared to accept silly high failure rates, maybe?
