hi i cant seem 2 use the search.

i have a wd raptor 74gb at the moment but seems to be getting old and slow

whats the fastest hard drive for around £130 ?

i only need a absolute maximum of 150 gb as i dont use the 74 gb i have now

i have a striker extreme board if this helps

thanks kris

would that one be as fast as the one i have at the moment "when it was new" ?
just looked at the raptor x is there much differcnce between this one you have showed me and the raptor x?

Raptorx is the same as the other one. It just has a window on it so you can see the internals of the drive.

just did a hdtune

came up failed on raw read error rate

but ok on the rest but all of the values were near worst

also acces time is 8.5

temp is 35

cpu use 2.4%

is your raptor 74gb the 8mb or 16mb version? the 16mb version is much quicker, get 1 of those or if u have 1 already get another and use raid0.

its the 8mb version think its a good 5 yr old now though
Raptors have a 5 year warranty. Go to the WD website and check out the serial number. Download and run their diagnostic software too. If it's dying, and still within warranty, they'll replace it with a new one. You don't need to have the reciept either.

They swapped my dying 4 year old 8mb 36gb Raptor for a brand spanking new 16mb version earlier this year.

exactly how old is your raptor. i am thinking of getting one, but don't want a hdd that wears out quick.

think its 4 years old now just unlucky that mine has worn still under warenty though ! will they send me exact one back or the newer version?

That's normally pot luck I'm afraid, if they have an exact match then they'll send that but if they don't then they'll upgrade the drive.

You'll probably get the new 16mb version as the 8mb version hasn't been made for some time.

If you're getting a Raptor 150, bear in mind the MTBF for the windowed Raptor is half that of the regular one (from memory I think it's 600,000hrs instead of 1.2M). Half the drive life for a flashy window anyone?

And whats does that matter, they both have same 5yr warrenty be it if you ran it for 1 hour then removed from PC for 4years and 11months and it was broken, or ran it ever hour 24/7 for 4years and 11months and then it was broken, it is still covered under warrenty, they do not come fitted with "hours run" meters. ;)

The Window does no harm IMO, mines both run cool. :)

The funny thing about all the Anti Raptor posts is the peeps who do them aint ever owned one esp the new 16MB versions.

I quite agree, it doesn't matter much when it comes to the 5yr warranty that seems standard for HDs nowadays, but it's the inconvenience of a failure that made it a no-brainer for me. I have a Raptor150 for my games machine cos I wanted a fast machine, but also cos a single drive cuts down on noise and power. Getting the drive with the longer mean lifetime just lowers the chance of me having to deal with a drive failure and losing gamesaves/installs etc. Just playing the odds here ;)
