fastest hard drive

And whats does that matter, they both have same 5yr warrenty be it if you ran it for 1 hour then removed from PC for 4years and 11months and it was broken, or ran it ever hour 24/7 for 4years and 11months and then it was broken, it is still covered under warrenty, they do not come fitted with "hours run" meters. ;)

The Window does no harm IMO, mines both run cool. :)

The funny thing about all the Anti Raptor posts is the peeps who do them aint ever owned one esp the new 16MB versions.
yh but you could stand to lose important data, it it isn't backed up.

Same with any HDD, be it 5400/7200/10000, Non Raid or Any Raid setup, you should always have a external backup, dumb not to.

BTW, the windowed drive wont fail any sooner than the non windowed drive, they just put that in to cover themselfs as of fact in a really hot PC case it will heat up the platters more as its not metal, they still give a 5year warrenty.

Not so unfortunately - MTBF figures are not plucked from the ether, they are based on hard sums and testing by the company - if the windowed drive has half the MTBF of the non-windowed drive then it's pretty clear that they are half as reliable - as someone said earlier - it's a pretty simple choice! If you have worked out your usage over the next 5 years and won't be anywhere near the 600 000 hours (in fact it's about 68 years ;) ) Then it's a pretty safe bet - but it's still half as safe as the non version.

(There was also an excellent thread a while back exposing the myth that hot drives fail faster - they found that cool drives actually last a far shorter time - odd but true!)

I have read all reviews, and there is no point in getting a windowed one if you dont need the bling, but its BS that it will deff fail sooner if the only factor is the window.

I accept it will get hotter than an non windowed one if case airflow over it is crap, not saying a drive will deff fail sooner if hotter but they do rate 55C MAX for most drives, there is no need for it to even be near that temp if fitted at front of a modern case with a 120mm intake fan blowing over it.

Again they put in that lower figure to cover themselfs, I wont be using my RaptorX 5 years but I bet its got as much chance as the non windowed one of not dying on me.

Anyhow back on topic, the OP asked about the fastest drive and he has had his answer many times over regardless of price/heat/noise etc.

One last question, not really related to the OP? :) I just thought, randomly enough, what if you have the windowed Raptor and UV lighting in your case? How much zinc is there in the platter, and will UV light shining through the window cause a charge on the plates, affecting read/writes and drive lifetime? Prolly a really dumb thought. I know it has to be UV light of a specific frequency, and I don't know if there's even any zinc in the alu alloy, but just a thought really :D Apologies for the wander even further off topic...

I'll take that bet ;)

Not of interest to everyone but I found THIS while scanning the WD site - seems MTBF is out and it's now based on Component Design Life (CDL) and Annualized Failure Rate (AFR). (<0.8% they claim which sounds pretty good to me!)

Why haven't people mentioned the AAKS western digitals? tomsH rates them faster than the raptors, and definitely the benchmarks are faster than the early 36/72 raptors

Cause it aint faster than current 16MB Raptors, that site did same for new Seagate, they told you the MAX Sustained Transfer speed not the AVERAGE, it was like 95MB/Sec, it that was true I would buy 2 and Raid0 them :p .

And whats the old Raptors got to do with anything ?

Not true:

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/record-making-hard-disk-uk,review-2343-7.html

The 7500AAKS is faster than the 150GB Raptor in maximum, mean and minium tests, being marginally slower than the 74GB Raptor on average and minimum reads. It's a similar story with write performance.

All in all it's much better value than the Raptors unless you specifically need low access times.

Very near it but since when is 48.1 Min faster than 55.8 and 74.8 AVG faster than 75.3 AVG, anyhow I would compair in HD-Tach 3.0 and only Average matters.

Edit, I see you agree on 74GB but there aint a1 50GB there.

The OP's topic is about the fastest HDD not cheapest, or best value or quietest etc etc.

Actually his question was:

whats the fastest hard drive for around £130 ?

To which the real answer is:

1xCheetah 15K.4 Ultra320 SCSI 36-GB Hard Drive

Running of a:

Dell Perc 4e/DC

;)

(And yes they can be had for that price if you know where to look :D )

Although you might get even better performance out of 2x18Gb 15k3 Cheetahs in a Raid 0 off the same controller

so, as a soon to be raptop owner, can you all please tell me how much faster my system should feel.

i will be buying the 74gig to use as the system drive (windows and programs on it), but all my data will stay on my 500 gig 7200rpm wd drive.

what do you think. will it be quicker.

Personally, and I use a lot of different PCs daily, the raptor in my home desktop 'feels' a lot faster than any other PC I've ever used, with the sole exception of a couple of PCs based on striped boots. XP installation was noticably quicker, boot times are silly, and starting up games is quicker.
