Hi guys,

I NEED MY PC TO BE 100% RELIABLE AND NOT CRASH!

Which is the better option......?

Build 5900x + X570 Dark Hero with DDR4 3600Mhz CL14 RAM (RAM LATENCY 7.7 nanoseconds) OR.....

12700K + Z690 Maximum HERO + DDR5 4800Mhz CL36 (RAM LATENCY 15 nanoseconds) for now and UPGRADE RAM to lower CAS latency.......4800Mhz CL16 (RAM LATENCY 6.6 nanoseconds) in 2/3+ years time.....

I don't want to mess around with timings etc, as I am a novice, I don't mind just having to enable XMP from bios.....

AIM FOR THE BUILD IS FOR USE AS HOME/OFFICE/MEDIA COMPUTER TO LAST AS LONG AS POSSIBLE.......

PLEASE HELP...........:)

Thanks

Whats the most intensive task you do ?

For now, hate those big windows updates from microsoft, sp1 sp2 etc.....take forever to update and install ...windows 11 and future updates will prob require more powerful faster ram?
watching 4k movies online,
running bitdefender scans....
word processing
emails
surfing internet, with multiple windows open.....

WANT SOMETHING TO LAST 8 YEARS MINIMUM.....

12700k us the way to go but probablly dont even need that poweful cpu, ddr5 has little impact on anything that's not massively data orientated that needs the extra bandwith.

A £250 motherboard will do the same as a fancy £400 board .

12700k, Z690 motherboard with ddr4 3600mgz memory is the cost effective choice.

To be honest either system will be overkill for your use at the moment and is likely to remain overkill for a considerable time.

Nobody can predict what your usage is going to be in 8 years time

What DDR4 Z690 motherboards would you say look good and have most features..... ? I want to make it look good as well as go good! I quite like the Z690 Hero, I know its overkill, but its DDR5. There really aren't any good looking DDR4 Z690 boards for sale, something with a little ARGB/RGB....... I think your recomendation makes a lot of sence......just wish there were nicer looking boards out there...... 12700k poweful CPU with Fast 3600 cl14/cl16 RAM!

True....but I don't see it changing too drastically...... and would rather have the power/speed at hand then not.....

A slight difference in latency is very likely to be irrelevant, especially 8 years out.

I would go with the cheaper am4 ddr4 option, probably with a 5800x, as your not going to ever use the extra cores the 5900x gives you.

I think buying with a plan of keeping everything for so long is the wrong strategy.
Buying "top" components for an extra 10% performance is more expensive than buying what you need and upgrading more often.

None of that needs any of what you are planning on buying. I can do all of that at great speed on a low end 6c/6t CPU, more RAM can help but not always however DDR4 is cheap right now but C16/C18 is going to make no difference to you for those tasks, nor is 3200MHz vs. 3600MHz. Throw your money at the wall if you like, or take the advice from people who have far more experience and some of us who do this professionally.

Msi z690 gaming edge ddr4 looks a solid option but could go b660 motherboard for a cheaper alternative.

Memory latency I would not overpay, for a small increase in performance.

As other have said, ram latency and DDR5 for the tasks youre doing it completely pointless and waste of money, better off with 32 or even 64g of 3200 DDR4 and very nice case.

12600k, B660, 64gb 3200 DDR4 would be my advise, and thats overkill tbh.

in reality 12400 and even 12100 are more than capable.

MSI Gaming Edge makes a lot of sense.......just did the calculations.....and it would cost me £2k for the pc alone.....! I'm coming to my senses now and thinking if it would make more sense just to buy an AIO instead.... like the HP Envy All in One 2022, when and if it is released in the uk? Upgrading and replacing components further down the line would become an issue then....?

Most of those tasks rely more on the SSD than they do on the CPU and when they do use the CPU, it'll only use one or two of your 8 or 12 cores. A 12700K / 5900X is pointless.

I would suggest an i3-12100 (not F) would be plenty and you could upgrade the CPU to a used 6/8 core, in maybe 4 (of your planned 8 years), if necessary.
