Hi guys I currently have 2Gb of OCZ Platinum in my rig and I was wondering if there was any memory available which is faster and would help me to improve my overclock from 2.6Ghz.

Yes it is DDR 400.

If you post the rest of your spec we could help further.
Since A8N-E is skt 939 you have an AMD 939 CPU.
The general consensus for this platform is that lower latencies are better than high frequencies on the memory.

Divider is the key to A64 overclocking.
Try keeping latencies down. If that 2bg OCZ kit is Low latencie for example, I would run them as high as possible on the stock timings off 2-3-2-5.

What OCZ kit is it? More info and we shall sort you out.

Ok guys sorry about not putting my specs up, so here they are.
-Opteron 165 @ 2.5Ghz
-Arctic Freezer 64
-2Gb OCZ 4001024ELPE
-Asus A8N-E
-EvGA 7900GTKO
-Antec Sonata II

I hope this helps you.

Right, from what I gather they are rated @ 2-3-2-5 @ 200mhz (400DDR)
These are the best 2 gig kits you can get for the socket 939 platform.

I also happen to have an opty 165 and I love it :)
Try these settings in bios:

Floppy support ENABLED (this is a must on A8N boards, for unkown reasons the board wont overclock much with this setting disabled)
Memory timings of 2-3-2-5 (you may have to adjust vdimm)
Set the HT to x3
Set the HTT/FSB to 310.
CPU vcore to 1.5 (it is safe, have mine running at that no probs)
set the memory frequency to 133.
With a HTT of 310 you should be just around 200 mhz on the ram.

Now this might not work. You will have to test your way forward to find the optimal settings.
If you lower the HTT, you will have to increase the ram freq, next step on the A8N-E is 166. So you would have to drop the HTT on the CPU.
Like I said. Testing is the key, you will find the sweet spot eventually.

The fact of the matter is to get the ram as close to 200mhz or higher using the divider!

GL!

I have never heard of this on any forum before, not saying its not true though

On A8N-E I can guarantee this is the case. Not sure about Premium/SLI versions.

But yes it has not been covered much in here :) However it is the truth. I speak from experience and know of atleast five others with the same board who came to the same conclusion.

Quoted for truth. Don't waste your money on high speed RAM as it is not worth it on socket 939. Your OCZ RAM is perfect.

What have these tests proven? They've proven that overclocking your K8 system while using a memory divider to keep that cheaper DDR RAM within spec is nothing to be ashamed of. We saw quite healthy gains in all departments, including memory bandwidth, merely by raising the CPU clock even though we kept the memory at ~200 MHz at all times. I repeat: You are not a weenie if you use a memory divider. :-)

Ive got the delux version and i'l git it a try later today when im back with my main rig, just shows that you learn something new every day.

Try chaning your motherboard, I once had an A8N-E and its settings were just not enough, like max VDIMM is 3.0, or max CPU voltage is 1.550, or CAS timings are basic. Try upgrading your mobo to DFI terrirotry and you will be able to get better results!

While you are correct in saying the A8N-E is limited regarding settings in bios, it is still absolutely fine for A64 overclocking.
Since it seems he has problems figuring out what to do, I seriosuly doubt he would go further with a DFI board which has more features and can be tweaked in many ways. More complicated for him I would imagine.

Stick with the A8N-E mobo. It is just fine for your purpose.
Once you figure it out you will see some good clocks. My board reaches 310HTT stable with HT x3 and I am pretty sure I've reached the CPU limit on 1.5v.
When I have the time I shall find out max HTT of the mobo.

fair enough :)

Ok guys I have made a little progress with my overclock and I am now sitting at 2.7Ghz. What I do not understand though is my memory timings right now. In cpu-z under the memory tab the Frequency reads 150.7Mhz and the FSB:DRAM is CPU/18. My other settings are multi x9, HTT 300, PCI 133. How can I get my memory to 200?

Thats because you using a very high divider. It should be something in the lines of CPU/14.

You sure you set the ram at 133?
Lock PCI to 101mhz for starters.
There's a menu where you can adjust timings of the ram. What does CPUZ say the timings are?

As we've said before; in the end overclocking is all about trial and error. A64 overclocking is considered rather easy aswell ;)

It took me a while to figure it out, but I managed so you should aswell!

Well 150 FSB for the RAM seems quite slow for the OCZ platinums as they can run all the way to 400!!!, what is your VDIMM at?

How do I work out the ram divider on my Asus board? I am also not sure if I can lock the PCI to 101mhz either.

Trial and error. You have to test your way forward.
My settings are HTT 307, HTx3, Ram 133 which gives me 199mz (398DDR) actual speed.

Ram timings of 2-2-2-5 (2x512mb BH5) 2-2-2-5 is not available in 1gb sticks.
Your 2-3-2-5 OCZ is the tightest in 1gb kits.

And dont forget to run 1T! You can adjust that in the same bois menu as the ram timings. Running a command rate of 2T affects performance badly on A64.
