I'm looking at the WD 2TB external at the moment, just the essential version of it (only need USB2).

any other suggestions? needs to be as fast as possible but absolutely reliable. had way too many Samsung drives die on me.

Cheers,

There is nothing that is "absolutely reliable" unfortunately (especially when it comes to moving mechanical parts). Try RAID + Internet Backup for absolute essentials.

None of the USB2 external drives are blazingly fast I find, but acceptable.

Perhaps a NAS with RAID-1 or 5 would suit your needs better

thanks fellas.

well i know from experience that Samsung drives are terrible. Owned about 6, and 3 of them died after less than a year. So I'm thinking WD is the way to go.

Gigabit ethernet sounds very tempting.... is the read/write speed faster than USB as a result? Or just a minor bandwidth improvement? I imagine the latter.

I won't be needing RAID I shouldn't think. Just massive amounts of storage - probably 4TB or more.

Cheers,
