Hi there guys,

Just curious as to what is the fastest model of C2D chip i could put in with the below components all at stock?

Team Elite 1GB (2 x 512MB) DDR2 PC2-6400C5 800MHz
Asrock Conroe945G-DVI (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

Cheers

Asrock state that the board will take any Core2 processor. up to the E6*** series.
so, i think the fastest processor you could put in this thing would be an E6750 :)

Supports FSB 1066/800/533 MHz processor, EM64T CPU and H-T Technology

Q6700 is fastest for this FSB, thought I would go with E7200 which is half price of it.

Also it's not that simple, if you want to upgrade it to something close to Q6600 I would also advise going for 4GB PC6400 C4 memory which unfortunately your mobo can't handle, meaning you will have to change mobo as well, then for both of them to work you will need at least something about 8800GT for gpu.

So after all I'll stick with either ~E7200 or won't upgrade at all, depending on whats your current CPU.

EDIT, oh well, looks like the E6700 is fastest unless they released some new BIOS.

Depending on your current CPU i'll either pick E2180 or nothing for this setup.
E6600-E6750 are pretty expensive atm for what they give.

your best bet is a cheap second hand e6600 on the bay, your ram is just fine no need to do anything with that, and as you can see on the chart the best you can get is a x6800. but where you get that i have no idea  and it costs about the same as a new pc (for me anywho)

Sheesh guys, I don't mean to sound harsh...but...read.

The list doesn't have a Quad on it, so they're obviously not supported. Also, top of the list is the X6800 - a 2.93Ghz Dual core with unlocked multi. That's obviously the fastest CPU.

Btw, just because a CPU isn's 'supported' it doesn't necessarily mean it won't work (QX9770 works on Asus P5K Deluxe on 0404 bios, which isn't 'supported'), but you better find out from someone a yes/no before you go buying one. I'd guess the old 945 chipset means that the PWN circuitry won't be up to snuff for a quad.

So in answer to the question, a X6800. Second hand E6600/E6700/E6750 would be a better idea though :)

Thanks for the replies guys, i'll go on the hunt for an E6600, however i've noticed that some of you say that i dont need to upgrade my RAM which i am a little confused about since my ram is only rated up to 800Mhz but the E6600 states 1066Mhz could someone explain this to me?

Thanks for all the help so far

Memory generally actually runs at the speed of the FSB but is rated at twice that due to being DDR (double data rate) which means that your DDR2 will run at a fsb of 400mhz (half the rated 800mhz).

The 1066 you mention refers to the stock speed of the cpu/motherboards quad pumped fsb. As it is quad pumped this rates its speed at 266mhz.

This means that your ram will be absolutely fine. At stock cpu speeds the DDR2 will only be running @ 266mhz x2 which is 533mhz - way below it's stock speed. :)

Infact, with that ram you could theoretically push your FSB to 400mhz (when overclocking) and take that e6600 to 3.6ghz.

I don't know what CPU you've got at the moment but for all round performance you may be better buying 2gb of Ram rather than a CPU.

Why would it matter if his OS is 64bit. Both XP and especially visita 32bit run smoother with 2GB of RAM rather than 1GB. If has the option of keeping his old RAM as well then 3GB won't hurt even it it makes little performance increase over a 2GB system.

I have got 2GB its just i had to copy the components out of my account on OcUK since they don't sell them anymore and didnt copy the quantity over, i've currently got an E2160 but am have problems overclocking it so i am after a new cpu.

Cheers
