Is it local or over a LAN? Do you have access to his computer? How many GB of data?

Over a LAN (100mps)
Remove his HD, plug into yours. Fastest
Portable USB HD, copy to that then onto yours. Or use a DAP.
DVD-RW.
Memory stick.
180K 5.25" floppies.
Data punch tape. :D

Speed of sending is probably going to depend on your uplink speed and the types of files you are sending. You don't go into detail but its likely the fastest you are going to be able to send to him is <400Kb/s as thats going to be the upper limit of a ADSL max connection.

Of course you might have SDSL in which case ignore me :)

But what sort of files are they? Are they compressed? How much data are we talking about?

A VPN would actually slow things down a bit. And as you said they don't need to be secure.

Something like the file transfer in MSN or IRC is going to probably be your quickest method if the files are quite large.

Not guaranteed to be the fastest file transfer speed, but certainly quicker than uploading it to one place then downloading it to another.

Nah, youll be lucky if it goes to the other end of your street.

actually it can go several miles believe it or not. Wifi usually gets blocked by walls and other obstructions but when given a clear unobstructed range it can go very far indeed. try driving along some main roads where there are no apparent houses and you can pick up wifi networks as if from nowhere.

If you sent it first class he would have it the next day.

Unfortunatley that never seems to be the case with rm and the person being in the isle of white, also it would end up being slower than sending the files accross the computer.

I'm using uk online adsl which is 768kbps upstream msn is always crap for sending files its always so slow even with loads of ports opened for it. The files are x.264 video files about 50mb or so big. I want to send it directly from my pc to someone elses, I don't see the point in hosting because it will just double the time it takes to send the file there.

 *sigh*

If you answered the bloody questions in post #4 you would've had an answer by now. Instead:

Question: How do I do X?

A: Try Y?

Reply: Nah, won't work [obvious reason that you didn't tell us]

A: Ok, try Z?

Reply: Nah, won't work [obvious reason that you didn't tell us]

A: ....

It seems FTP is the simplest way. One of you setup an FTP server or use some hosting.

Or, I could be wrong, because I don't bleeding know how much data you have. Sending over a bunch of DVDs may well be quicker, for example!

Right, so in the time we've spent faffing around in here it could've all been done. So amusing :p

Unless you have lots of these files, of course.

Oh, whatever, I give up! The frustration kills me! But FTP server is the way to go:)
