Fatal crash while being recovered by AA!

Well no, when towing, he would have to be in the car......

It could be argued that the AA van should have fixed it up to the wheeler, but that's for the legals to sort out

My dad worked for a similar recovery company for decades, towards the end of his career he had a couple of incidents with drivers not doing the right thing. One driver left their car in 1st gear while being towed which as you can imagine led to a rather bigger mechanical problem than the original call out was for and another guy got out of the car to get his phone after my dad got in his van to tow. The car then mounted the kerb and hit some road furniture.

The problem is it that these days drivers really aren't very clued up when it comes to things like towing. When I were a lad etc. etc..

I can see incidents like this leading to flatbed only recovery in the future.

Nope, it's just AA cost cutting, they should use tow trucks and lift the 2 drive wheels up and if it's AWD use gojacks. Something like a self loader.

@above flatbeds are good however more expensive and the thing I mentioned above is a safer solution and cheaper.

I've told the AA on the phone before "It's proper broke, you won't be able to fix it at the roadside, and make sure you bring a flatbed not a bar/lifting the drive wheels in a frame.

Also I guess it helps that when having to tow on a rope, it's always been a car that doesn't have Brake Servos or Power Steering or anything even when it's working!

Lifting them in a frame shouldn't be so bad, aslong as it's FWD, if it's not Go-Jacks would do it. That's so much safer than a rope or a rigid bar. Because in my opinion a rigid bar/rope should be illegal. It's unsafe with modern cars as you say.
