Faulty Phenom 9950?

Last weekend i did something rather silly :(

I bought a Phenom 9950 but could not get it working on my motherboard (Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H). Stupidly when checking the cpu compatibility list for the board i was looking at revision 2 - my mobo is revision 1 and does not support this cpu :/

Yesterday i bought a Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DQ6 which does support the Phenom 9950, but needs the bios to be updated using and older cpu first.

So today installed my 5600+ and have tried 2 different bios' - F5 and F6B, but when i install the the Phenom i get no display  I have tried 2 different fx cards, on my 4870x2 the fan speeds up and slows down and a red light flashes on the back of it ... the other card is a smaller fanless one.

If i use the the 5600+ cpu it boots fine - i connected my os drive to see if xp64 and vista64 would boot even though the mobo had changed and they did.

So is my cpu dead? Never had come across a faulty cpu before :(

i hope this doesnt break any rule , otherwise delete at will

The one i have now has a blue sticker.

Im actually begining to wonder whether it is in fact my cpu thats faulty as some very weird happened an hour ago that has got me well and truly stumped

After putting my old setup back together i thought id watch a film, then towards the end of the film my pc just turned off, which its never done before. So i tried the usual stuff to kick a pc back to life - power cable out, reset cmos, even took out the battery which ive not done for years...... totally dead :(

Also my media centre, which was not plugged in at the time also refuses to start!?

Its like someone set off a selective emp grenade in my room :/

If a cpu dies, will the psu refuse to start?

Stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, STUPID!

PSU died :/ It's been such a long time since ive had to deal with a blown psu i had forgotten that plugging in a power cable to one would instantly bugger up the cable.... that and the fact that i couldnt believe that a the most expensive psu ive ever bought had only lasted a month

So thinking that maybe the reason i couldnt get the 9950 to work had something to do with the dodgy Antec psu, i plugged in my old psu and managed to get it to post! But only if the memory is put in slots 2 and 4

Irritatingly i cannot use my 4870x2 now as my old psu doesnt have the addtional power connections for it :(

So ..... is my cpu ok and the motherboard faulty?

...... until around lunchtime while i was playing Clear Sky....

Cpu fan went absolutely mental, smelt something burning and now my pc is completely dead  Im getting really fed up with computers :(

Think the cpu was running at around 50-60. Stock cooler

Just took the mobo out of the case to have a closer look and i cant see any marks. Tried my old cpu, with 2 other psu's and got nothing.

Irritatingly my old cpu no longer seems to work as i tried it in my old mobo and the psu powers itself and the cpu fan up for about a second then turns off :( But if i put the 9950 into the old board, although the board does not support it, the psu and cpu fans spin up as they should

So im assuming my mobo is dead and for reason my old cpu!
