Good evening gents,

Sorry this is another sob story but I could really do with some second opinions. I really can't afford to replace my graphics card as I've just had my first baby!

I’ve had this rig for 2 years until about 3 months ago, I have been having problems. Firstly, I was having boot problems but replaced the power supply and now I’ve been having loads of artefacts on screen problems and crashes.

I’ve attached some pics and some videos of consistant problems.

Most times the monitor just goes off and then the screen goes “Digital/Analogue” on screen which it would do if the monitor was on but PC not powered.

Often, the system will just straight crash but sometimes it looks like it will crash and then go “The device driver has failed but has now recovered”.

It used to be OK on windows but when I tried to run CS it would artefact and crash. Maybe when the gfx kicks in ?

The fan is on full manual, so its not an overheat issue. I have a 4780x2 2gb.
I guess I am thinking, is it the gfx faulty ? Anybody else have any ideas?

Hi there, may I ask what manufacturer your card is and when exactly did you buy it? Depending on the manufacturer you may be able to get a replacement under warranty.

It certainly looks like a GPU issue, however it would be good to know the details of the current PSU.

Personally i would try a few things out before you think anything is wrong with hardware.

Make sure there is nothing around the monitor that might cause an electromagnetic field
on the monitor making the picture distorted, also if the monitor is plugged into an extension
cable plug it directly into the wall and see if that makes any difference, if its in an extension
cable then something else on there could be interfering with it.

Failing that:

i would say un-install you Gfx card drivers all together and download the latest version
of all the Gfx software that you have on the system see if this makes a difference.

Also

if you have your Gfx card fan on full 100% of the time then the fan maybe getting knackered and the card might be over heating which will begin to give you graphical problem
which do manifest in several different way so i would also suggest checking your
temperatures as well m8.

Hope this helps.

The boot problems don't appear to exist anymore! but yes, the gfx issues and crash issues are both here with both PSU's.

I went from 600w power supply to 700w gaming power supply.

You're right I definately could do with borrowing somebodies gfx, but I don't have any mates who have GFX's.

My system is pretty high spec don't just don't remember what. Plenty of cooling in the case. Would the specs of the whole system be helpful?

The GFX hasn't been overclocked hardly at all in 2 years. I've tried changing slots, cleaning it... Should I try a stress test?

I have reformatted twice, and tried new HD's. I've tried a few different drivers, the most recent ones seem to be the most stable.

the fan is only on 100% for the past week or so as I tried to rule out overheating :(

The video I posted, the youtube one makes it look like a gfx issue? thanks for the advice so far esp shadz! (bar the cooking my gfx card, ha ha ha!)

But what brand are they?

Yes. We need to know the CPU, motherboard, RAM, GPU, PSU and OS.

Yes, use Furmark and run it for about 15 minutes. Use something like Afterburner to check what temps it reaches while it's stressing.

Yup, so far it looks like a VRAM problem.

Would you be able to tell us the make and model name/number of the PSU?

To check the temps on the GPU, this is the software you want. Also, to stress test it Furmark is the great- though don't run it for too long tho and keep an eye on the temps.

Futurmark is the best thing i have found for stress testing your computers Gfx,

But as it has been said by a couple of people make sure you can check your temperatures
while it is performing the test as the system maybe fine with it is idle or not doing much
but under stress the system maybe overheating.

Also if its an ATI card that you have you could always try turning down the clock speed
of the card with the Catalys Control Centre and see if that does anything, as if it is the
memory or anything on the card this might make it a little more stable.

Looks just like the artifacts from my 8800 that has just gone belly up. luckily it's a BFG card that came with a lifetime warranty. Unluckily I think BFG have folded making the warranty worthless!

May be a stupid suggestion but if you have two 4780s in crossfire, can you try each one separately to see which one is faulty? I may have misunderstood, though.
