is there any software than can help recover files from a faulty harddrive?? my son dropped my portable harddrive now i cant acces it properly. if i plug it in pc it shows all files etc but when i goto copy them onto another harddrive it keeps hanging the pc and im hoping there may be some way of recovering the stuff

You could try just copying the whole disc. Download and install Easus Partion Manager.

Yes, it actually copies it outside of windows, so you wont have access until the process is complete.

It basically takes a snapshot of your HDD as it is right now and tries to manage any errors it comes across on the way. that way you can load the same data onto a new drive and fingers crossed you haven't lost anything !!
