Faulty memory?

Hi there,
Have just been given 2x1Gb sticks of Corsair Value Select PC2-5300 memory.
Put it into my Abit KN9S alongside the 2x1Gb Corsair XMS2 memory I have already - wouldn't POST.
Tried with just the Value memory, also wouldn't POST.
So, I'm guessing the memory is faulty, or there is some bios settings making it incompatible.
Any suggestions what to try next?
Not the end of the world, as it was free anyway, but would like to know it's definitely dead before I bin it!
Cheers,
Ian

I'm guessing you've already tried with one stick at a time.

I wouldn't have thought voltage would be a problem with that memory (default is 1.8v, some RAM needs 2.0 or higher to work properly).

OK, so one of the value sticks will post, the other won't.
Before giving it up as dead, is there anything else I can try?
Cleaning contacts etc?
Cheers

Make sure there's nothing obvious on the contacts. The corsair value select range only requires 1.8v as far as I know, so I don't think it's voltages causing any problems.

There's not that much else you can try really.

It's timings, the board will be set up with XMS ones, loosen the timings or set them to auto.

Could be that. However, when I've changed between RAM the timings have always adjusted themselves accordingly, worth a try though.

Not sure how changing the timings would help if one value stick boots on it's own, but the other doesn't?

Because one value stick may run at XMS timings by some fluke, some motherboards don't read SPD settings right either.

might as well just try resetting ur bios through battery. if that doesnt work enter timings and voltages manually from retailer settings. if that doesnt work. memtest it, comes up with errors send it off with RMA form as proof.
